just a general query.
i've got a completly standard 2003 fe 400 and have noticed that when first starting the weather seems to have quite a effect.
on warm days it lights up perfectly and cold days it takes a couple of prods.
it's not causing me any grief but was wondering what it was down to.

once warmed up it starts first time on button or boot.

that's a pretty easy one in my opinion. your choke jet is too small.

a bike wants one choke jet to start it and within about 2-seconds it could do with a smaller one. but you need the bigger one to get it started!

a good example of that is my keihin.....

i used a #75 and the thing could be run on choke while:

had a shufty (the john to you!)
locked the garage
togged up

but would it start on the race line atwaddon? nope!

so now i have an ~80 in and it starts first time everytime BUT i have to turn the choke off after about 10 seconds and blip the throttle.

it's how you have to race though - you have to be in it to win it!

call contact developments of reading. stick it in search.

Taffy

From your description, your carb idle settings are just right!

What its down to, having to prod a few times when its cold, is just like on a car; it needs the choke to enrich the gas/air mixture to start when cold. On modern cars this is taken care of by the engine computer automatically. In older cars, like my 58 Triumph TR3, the choke is manual and must be used because there isn't any accelerator pump to shoot a squirt of gas into the intake manifold for starting or engine computer to take care of things.

Your 03 Berg is just line the Triumph in that regard. On my 00 Berg when cold I put my choke on for 1-2 slow kicks with the ignition off, then turn the choke off, turn on the ignition and then give it a good kick. It lights up every time.

Joe

Good explanation Joe! I do exactly the same on my '02 650.

And a nice Triumph by the way

Off topic:
On my '70 beetle's tuned engine I use dual Solex carbs.
They don't have a choke at all. But each has an accelerator
pump. When cold the throttle has to be used several times
before starting the engine. This activates the accelerator pumps
and shoot some gas into the intake manifolds.
