I was riding today with enforcer4 and attempted a
water crossing that ended up about 3 feet deep.
I ended up on my side mostly under water.I shut
the motor off and righted the bike as quick as I
could but i gat water into the crankcase. Is this
normal? Where does the water get in at?

you have three entries.

the exhaust ports
through the carburretor
through the engine breather on top of the rocker cover

undo air filter check for water in bottom of the sock
remove the carb and blow through. replace
remove oil
pull the two exhaust downpipes and check for water
pull the plug and turn over the engine on the leccy boot whilst holding the kill button. about two or three seconds will suffice
fresh oil and filter. clean spark plug with rag. fresh air filter
start bike

any more water will vapourise.
having done the electrics on my '02, my 'weak spot' became the carb breather pipes. the thing to do that i haven't yet is: put a T-junction in and feed a second pipe from each breather up into a dry area so that when the 'dangling' pipes get immersed the carb 'breaths' via the pipes that go up.

haven't had a chance to do this yet myself but would be great if someone were to do it and find out where the next weakness is!

BTW your ignition stator may be wet. i let mine breath with a hole under the cases so i wouldn't worry too much but they are prone to going aren't they?!

good luck and LET US KNOW how you got on.

Have you drilled a small hole in the bttm of the ignition cover to acts as a drain. I was thinking of doing this. Do you just leave it open all the time or did you tread it and use a grub screw to seal whilst riding?

I though having it open might allow too much dirt/dust etc to enter.

Cheers

a dealer rider told me at a meeting in no uncertain terms to leave it open and that the force of the flywheel would pump anywater clear and out again whilst also allowing the vapourising effect on any water as you travel on.

yes it's clear. it's still 6mm and threaded if i need to go back. but i won't!

Let me know if any help is needed as I will be happy to come over and complicate things even more! Just make sure you dry out that stator and ignition module ASAP.

The air cleaner is dry.It must have got in through the vent and
exhaust.I filled the motor with wd 40 and then I will flush it with oil.
I put 2st oil in the cylinder and kicked it over with the plug out.
My only concern is I can't roll the bike in gear with the clutch in.
I cant believe the water could swell the plates. The friction material
wouldn't be able to tolerate oil either.Any ideas before I take it apart?

unless your bike was immersed completely for nearly a minute you aren't dealing with a full scale flood here. if the clutch drags it's not so unusual. water can't remove a film of oil that abounds in your engine that quickly.

if i were you i'd seriously consider flushing fluid. i don't know how it deals with water but maybe someone here knows?

FF gets to everything. i think you may be being a little OTT with the full rebuild. 95% of that engine can be got at from the outside without removing the basic engine. FF will do the rest. no need to strip.

I did not mean split the motor, just take the
covers off.The wd40 should remove all the water.
I am just hoping I didn't warp some clutch plates
or something.

Well the berg is up and running again.
Six oil changes later the oil finally looks
water free. The clutch now works perfect.
The stator was full of water also. For an
engine that holds so little oil I can't believe
how much water it will hold.

If I can find a bike that steers this good, yes.
None of the four strokes do.The newer 300EXCs
and the 2002+ GasGas 300e are the only bikes
I am considering.I never like to go backwards
in performance with my bikes. This is my 20th
bike.Far from the worst I have ever had(HD).
(Is that politically correct?)
Most dealers won't even take a berg on trade.
This may be an adventure in itself selling it.I
don't want to sell it to some ***** either,it
deserves better than that.My wife is out of work for
2-3 months or I would have kept the KTM for
my wet riding and as a spare.

Hey Tim,

As soon as you get your berg sorted I know where there is some great puddles for us to go jump. LOL

Let me know I will drive this time.

Just a little reminder as to why you got water in your motor.

From the rust on the stator I would think
water has been in there way before I fell.
Do you guys take the cover off after every
wash or just drill a hole in the bottom?
Can you silicone seal the cover?

I pull the mag cover off after every wash. Water or condensation is present nearly every time. The hole in the bottom of the cover trick won't work well here in the desert due to silt. I have two vent hoses attached to the cover and looped up toward the top of the bike. Not too many water crossings out here so it has worked well so far.

I was having problems with the Keihin carb on my bike on river crossings so I fitted a T piece to the overflow tubes on each side of the carb with the new tubes running up under the tank.
Ran through a huge puddle yesterday where the water came upto the bottom of the tank, just gave it a bit more throttle and motored through. No coughing or spluttering.
Had to stop for a DRZ that sucked some water up, after getting it running my bike just fired up as normal.

In regard to the stator I did the following.
1) Sealed the top of the stator wire loom with silicon
2) Tapped a hole in the bottom of the stator cover and ran a breather up under the tank.
3) Made a gasket for the cover.

I did the first two mods and percerviered with the oring on the cover but it still let a little water in, since fitting a gasket I have never found water in the stator. Now I only check it if I have done river crossings or puddles that cover the stator.

twist

great info. up to the bottom of the tank hey! that means if you'd stopped you really would have been knackered!

do you run the standard engine breather as well?

Taffy

The water has been so deep around here
I just run the vent up in my helmet. It
seems to give my hair a little extra sheen too.
