Gentlemen...and the odd lady, who may be present.
No doubt i will get shot down in flames for this ...BUT.
In my garage i have gallons of used oil.... Tell me why i shouldn't use it on my o-ring 'Stealth' chain please. Considering it's supposed to be tougher than my grans false teeth !

Well, there is no need to lubricate an O-ring chain as the lubricant is sealed in. A light coat of WD-40 after washing helps displace the water and keep it from rusting. You could use your waste oil but it would not be the best choice, IMHO.

My theory on O-ring chains is that any oily goo residue only attracts and holds dirt, which ruins the o-rings. The best lube, and most expensive, is Tri-flow, a spray on lube with teflon in it. It keeps the o-rings lubed with no goo. Cheap spray lube from Wal-Mart works fine. I use it after every ride, and after every washing.

Ady,
I would look into taking your used oil to a recycling depot or something of that sort. No, not the storm drain. I don't think it's good for anything and in fact, it is quite toxic.

I lived at the end of a 1/4 mile gravel driveway when I was a kid. I remember my dad using old motor oil as a dust inhibitor. They'd probably lock him up if he were to do that nowadays.

i think it's good to lightly lube the o' ring chain , there is the rollers and sprockets that need lube .

Lubes

I think everyone has their own opinion on this subject! Mine is to lightly lube an o or x ring chain with a chain lube as alot of the grease and lube supplied when made will fling out whilst riding and cleaning. I have tried using Wd 40 and Inox but these (IMO) cause the o'rings to swell and where out the chain faster. I have also tried soaking my chains in old oil for a few days but a good chain lube seems to work better. I have also heard of good results from using Lanolin which they use on huge industrial chains and the hull of boats and ships, but I havent used it myself?

I use Bel Ray lube. It goes on wet and then dries to a waxy finish that doesn't collect dust/dirt.

I use used oil from putting it on the chain to lubeing the points on the levers and lots of other things. Make sure to wipe off the excess cause it does make a mess. Old oil tends to get clumps in it, might want to filter that part out. When you don`t have anything else it works just fine. Make sure there is no gas in it.

RE: Re: Used Oil

Hell, I use it in lawn mowers and my pressure washer. Its still coolfor that and I take the rest to work. We have a oil recycle guy who picks all the gear oil and other oils we use at work. Good deal for me..

RE: Re: Used Oil

So were all agreed then !!
There must be a good use for all that spent oil.... How about for oiling them filters ? I'M JOKING !!!

If you had a boat with a hot bulb engine you'd know what tae do with the old oil. You'd even ask for old oil at the local garages etc. And the chip shops and macdonalds would know who to call to pick up their used oil. :D

Me thinks he means "diesel" motor

Like others suggested, don't put used motor oil on a chain, O ring, X ring or otherwise .
1. Non sealed chain, it'll just fling off, there are no properties to motor oil that will let it adhere to a chain. It'll never be there long enough to penetrate any metal particle or offer any real lubrication.
Lube a sealed chain to hold down friction between the plates and the rubber ring seals and make the seals on each pin last longer. Clean it to!
2. Used oil on sealers chains: X or O ring. after the oil has been used in and automobile or other vehicle, it becomes contaminated.(why else would you change it?)
Factors include gasoline, diesel, metal particles and the usual sludge that contains god knows what. The effects that this has on a rubber seal is detrimental at it's best performance, and will ruin any proper sealing an O or X or any ring has. (EX: the rear main rubber seals on most vehicles leak, eventually due to the motor oil not being changed ofter enough, and the contaminants tear up the seal)
THe WD 40 is a fair trick, I've done it, but it has no adhesion at all,..New motor oil, (read above) fling off.
A good lube made for high heat and revolutions is best. Motorex has three great chain lubes. The Bel Ray mentioned is also a great lube and is a popular choice in the clear formula. Repsol also make a great lube.
But remember, the old Gunk products? they had a chain lube which by chain lube standards is still used today, it contained the stickiest substance know to mankind in it, smelled horrible, (try smelling the Repsol chain lubes)
It was whale sperm, said so right there on the can! Now you know. ~

There are some good shop heaters out that are fired with used oil, see you could do that and be all green and tree huggy. Al Gore might send you a piece of his Oscar
