oiled the air filter like i use to with my old 200,,put oil/filter in carrier bag then sqeezing it..
then bike would nt start obviously to much oil on the filter...

so bought the spray on type gave the filter a light sprey & still wont start...seems to me these filters dont like hardly any oil on them at all,,,do u guys have the same problem...

it starts fine wth no oil on it at all

i have been washing and oiling mine with Notoil regularly, just a light application of oil and some rim grease, no problems at all, you must have some other issue?

No problems here. The only thing I do different is wrap the filter in a clean rag after oiling and wring it out a few times. Seems to get theb excess oil out, but still leave enough to do its job.

well after leaving it for couple of hrs & geting the dryer to it gave it nother go & starts fine,,,so trick is may oil it & leave it for few days,,

Hi Fakesy,

I recall in recent issues of ADB that they say that there is something in the vapour from air filter oils that can stop a 4 stroke particularly from starting, I have never had this problem with either 2 or 4st engines, but obviously they have experienced it.

just give it a few hours, i ususally let it 'dry' or go tacky before re- fitting it if im not in a hurry, this also means the oil goes from a watery state to a more viscous state, which will catch the dust better, so its probably when this happens that the vapours (that the engine doesent like) are being emitted.

Wringing a foam air filter is a no-no. Stresses and tears the foam cells which are critical for an oiled foam air filter to work.

I use Notoil. Place the filter in a big plastic bag (roughly 10" square) and then measure 2.5 oz of Notoil oil. Work that into the filter evenly through the bag by folding a lean section over a rich section and squeezing the two together.

Used just a bit more oil on the slightly larger KTM air filters.

Let the filter sit a day or two in the bag, with one end open, before installing. Bike loved it, ran exactly as with the heavily oiled factory filter.

Notoil cleaner doesn't work very well on the factory green oil. Gasoline seems to be the most readily available cleaner to remove the factory oil.

i always spray now. then i compress the filter in a rag. they are so often over oiled....

another thing. when i did FR1 you could not believe how filthy the yanks tun their air filters yet the bikes are AOK. so instead of cleaning mine once every three rides i now go for a whole season w/o touching it. i realised how fussy i'd been.

I'm with Taffy, I started spraying my filters a couple of years ago.
Every 3 or 4 rides i use a strip of kitchen towel and drag it across the filter foam and this rolls the dirt off it to make sure it can breathe, then i spray again.
At the end of the season i chuck filter, put a new one in freshly sprayed and start again.

I've used Motul ever since I can remember because it was the stickiest stuff I could find, but had to get the hang of only using just enough to cover the filter. It's easier to splash heaps on & work it through the filter but use less & take your time. I like NKW570's idea of the wipe-off technique. Maybe oil first & spray after ? I've never considered spray on stuff as good as pour on but Taffy's giving it the thumbs up so might have to give it a whirl.

Remember Wal that they don't have dust in the UK!!

I've tried the Silkolene spray and it works but is a very expensive way to oil a filter. I like Castrol, Motul and Motorex. Dribble it on sparingly to an air dried filter that's been cleaned in turps and work through. There will be an oil residue on the foam from the cleaning process too which is OK. Don't wash them in soap and water as this just accelerates the break down of the foam. Treated this way, and only washed when dirty, filters last me 100s of hours and many, many cleans.

I also keep them oiled ready for use so I never fit a freshly oiled one.
