Throttle Position Sensor

There's probably been a number of posts regarding TPS but a search in the Fuel Forum didn't return any results so I’m posting a request for information on the TPS for a 41 FCR on my 05 550.

I found that one of the three wires to the TPS broke in two. I removed the TPS to replace it and found out it was $150.00. After this bit of info I went to the tool cabinet and retrieved the soldering iron for a less expensive fix.

Two questions come up.

1. What purpose does the TPS serve? I rode my bike without it and couldn't feel any adversarial traits in power. Keep in mind that I have never ridden this bike with the TPS operating so I don't have a baseline to compare to.

2. If there is a purpose and the TPS is needed how is it adjusted once installed on the carb?

Thanks for the help!

Re: RE: Throttle Position Sensor

Hi Dyran,

Your TPS is a potentiometer, it sends a varying Milli voltage back into to the cdi, this in turn with the rpm of the engine sets a desired ignition setting.

To reset the TPS you will require the Milli voltage base setting and also you will have a base setting for the throttle arm of the carb, once you have these to figures it's pretty much straight forward to reset.

Sorry I don't have the settings you require.

Hi Dyran,

The figures for setting the TPS are, Check the idle is within spec, disconnect plug from TPS measure the resistance between blue and black and the reading you are looking for is 750 Ohms +or - 50.

To reset loosen screw on body and rotate clock or anticlock to achievre correct ohnms reading.

RE: Re: RE: Throttle Position Sensor

you find they make the biggest difference when lugging a hill in a gear too high or in mud. dale feels they're not much good so i wouldn't spend a penny to repair it. remove if you need too.

i personally think that if i had it, i would keep it. what harm can it do!

Waytt,

The TPS, 'Throttle Position Sensor', provides additional ignition spark advance at partial throttle operation and sort of mimics the old vacuum advance function of an automobile distributor.

It improves partial throttle gas mileage.
