My 1999 501 runs well at 1500 ft. When cold I put full choke and kick it through twice slow to prime the carb - then no choke and one good kick usually gets her going. Let it warm up for about 30 seconds and I can be on my way.
Anyway - this week I took it up to Utah - up to 6000 ft and it was a total bear. It took me an hour to get it started in the morning and then it woudn't idle even when warm unless I had about 1/4 choke dialed in.
Of course as I drove around the choke vibrated off and then when I stopped it would die again. At 1500 ft when warm it idles great and started easy with one kick - at altitude I had to choke it and it took three or more kicks to get it going again when it stalled even when good and warm. argh!
does this make sense that I have to choke it at higher altitude? Maybe I'm an ***** but I thought the choke made it run richer? And high altitude made it also run richer? So why do I have to choke it more at altitude?
Is this normal? If it's tuned for 1500 ft do i have to rejet before I take it up to the mountains?
or is there maybe something else going on?
