Testing the starter ?

Hi there
will try to explain with my words the current situation of my 501 - 00 model, in advance sorry for the "frenglish" i will use.
The starter is turning slow from 2 weeks now, not enough to get the engine alive.
I've mesured the bat.voltage (12.7), used a booster, tried a different new battery, adjust the valves properly.. without success. When using the manual decomp.lever, the engine can revolution but a bit too slow imo.
What's next now :
- is the starter dead, how can it be tested ?
- should i go to the mechanical way: auto-decomp. issue ?
- ..
Any ideas, suggestions are welcome.

bonjuer!

suggest a modern decomp, new atomiser and maybe the needle, new iridium plug, a 'beefy' starter and new battery. check the DOC for details on 'wrong ignition marks".

Taffy

Try remove spark plug-check by activating the starter without compression.Should spinn real fast.If not- battery or starter,or torque limiter is slipping.Put the plug back on,grab the decomp lever on,try turn it and see for difference. It may be wants a decomp clog new type!

Hi Taffy, Kris
- The engine starts via the kick, that seems not to be an ignition issue.
(in my garage.. fine: I managed to kick and start twice but as i'm totally unsure to realise this miracle again when lost in the middle of nowhere, i would prefer get the e-start as a backup.. as save my chicken legs).
Will try your recommandations Kris and will post this when back home.

- To avoid confusion, does the decomp. upgrade would consist in replacing this small device only (ie: 200 159-01 in my case) by a newer version (ie: '04 means - 590.36.016.000) ?

- Do you know any similar starter that would fit in that '00 frame (I guess this famous Mitsuba SM-14 is for the youngest models) ?
Thx for your time

you need the spring as well.
can't upgrade your starter.

590.36.017.000

Hi Rat,

I have few questions.........

Was the bike starting fine on the button up until 2 weeks ago?

How many hours do you have on the bike?

Are/is the grounding and other connections good?

My experience with my 2001 bike was the electric start worked fine with everything stock, except the upgrade to the YTZ 7S. Which battery do you have?

Anyway, it began to not start well on the button, starter motor turning slowly. Eventually I pulled the starter motor apart and found that the bushing for the rotor on the brush end had worn egg shape and the rotor was rubbing on the stator. I bought a used starter with a good bushing in it, swapped the purchased end cap onto my starter and it has started fine ever since.

Another thing, on the SEM ignitions there is a wire from the starter solenoid that is energized when the solenoid picks up that goes to the coil. This energizes the coil and get's the ignition going when the flywheel speed is low like when electric starting. Make sure this wire is intact.

Also, all of the mods listed above are good, however, if everything was good until two weeks ago, then something else must be wrong.

Hope this helps,

Dale

RE: Re: Testing the starter ?

Hi All,
back in the garage with a new decent battery (YUASA), checked/cleaned the connectors, the brushing of the starter seems fine too, but no real progress.. I guess the next step is to go for the auto-decomp. upgrade.

The Bike is in good condition, always used the e-start cold or hot... must confess I have never used the kick.
During my last attempts, it happens sometimes that the e-starter stays "glued" with the kick, have the feeling to kick with the starter. It can be released using the manual decomp. Does anyone know the root cause of this ? how to cure ?

Regards
