When I bought My new 06 Fe450e a couple months ago, the bike was jetted by Dan at motoXotica, he had richened up the stock Husaberg jetting to

178mj
needle one clip richer then stock
FS 2 turns.

Bike ran great 0-5000 feet in 50-75F. electric sewing machine fun

15-20 hours bike gets more bottom end, bike is nice....noticed just a flutter down low and engine brake pop slight once or twice........... decide time to go to the Jedi master Dale Lineaweaver as he lives near by

I stripped out my Carb and went to Dales shop. Met Dale, had a great visit, really enjoyed watching him install his mod on my carb and listening to his thinking. Here is the man at work;

I get home, install the carb and run the bike down and out my back alley.........seemed a little rough? hard to start too but had more pep in the throttle. bike was just ok.......Decide I have to wait till the weekend to go riding. I take the bike this weekend to one of my favorite spots in the woods at 4000 ft. It's cold out 40F. Bike starts fine..........but..then I try to ride the bike and well this picture tells the story here I am trying to FIX my Carb :twisted: 8O

:hang: Bike was a little lean, cough up and sputtered :smirk: like a pregnant goat with pneumonia :lol: it took me keeping the choke on to run at all. I dropped the clip two places , raising the needle to get more fuel and bingo bike ran well all day. 55 miles of great trail riding. YES the bike is more lively and "brighter" . Dale's mod is an enjoyable jetting mix for sure. The good news is I can feel the Lineaweaver magic force at work in my bike...... we just need to get his kit, designed for the 550/ 650 more dialed in to my Fe450e and my location riding, etc

Me and Dale are now working thru emails on a better solution for the my Fe450e. Basically we probably just need to increase that main jet from his 150 to a 160....or more till I can drop that needle one clip and get back in the 5th position. ill reportr on our progress. I was gonna wait till We got it perfect, but I couldn't resist telling the story

I'll let dale, if he chooses to, explain the rest in technical terms. Fun stuff I'm on the cutting edge! Thanks dale, we'll get it dialed in.

This carb tuning biz can be a fun learning process if you don't get stuck with an ill running bike way out in BFE.

Even after the experts have worked on your bike it's always best to test the changes close to home, near the garage before venturing out too far.

When possible also try to test carb changes on the dyno to help you spot the trouble zones. Seat of the pants feel can also be useful.

The decision to disable your accelerator pump function might just be adding another layer of unnecessary complexity to your carb tuning issues. It begs the question as to why would the carb manufacturers and bike builders choose to include an AC pump in the first place? Maybe the AC pump is actually useful. How many other bike owners or manufacturers disable or remove their AC pumps?

With my bike I knew all along from the dyno chart, spark plug color, increased sputtering at altitude and seat of the pants feedback that I was suffering from a rich condition below 15% throttle. It was just a matter time working down the PJ# and going to a fatter needle when it finally stopped running like a chimp and began to run like a champ.

Hang in there, revisit the dyno, check the graphs and don't be afraid to try some different jets/needles and your bike will soon be in good running order.

Note:
The "FE450E" proves exception to the proverbial rule in that said motorcycle features an OEM installed Keihin "FCR 39 MM" carburetor as opposed to that of the "FCR 41" featured on the remaining Husaberg line.

A smoothbore variable Venturi carburetor such as that of the Keihin FCR produces a very strong fuel signal even during acceleration. The accelerator pump is intended to cover holes in fuel delivery due to signal reduction during acceleration. Such is most noticeable in a fixed venturi carburetor.

The FCR 39 mm and 41 mm carburetors were originally designed for use on high rpm multi cylinder engines with each carburetor feeding a displacement of only 250 cc - 300 cc. Needless to say a pump shot was required in such an application to compensate for signal loss during acceleration from low (off the cam) rpm.

Regarding a large displacement single:
Venturi signal will remain strong even during rapid throttle opening as a result of the increased displacement.

Regarding Husaberg:
The pump remains in place to help cover the OEM lean carburetor settings.

In addition technical riding is enhanced as a result of a proper and more consistent A/F ratio. Such is the result of eliminating the constant pump dribble which comes from slight throttle movements.

"Your mission should you choose to except it" is to develop the DL jet kit for the 39 mm FCR on the fe450e so slackers like me can have perfect carburation with as little effort as possible.Oh and BIGBOB could you spend a little less time riding at 4000' ft., its closer to sea level here.

I live at 200ft and there is a ride park near by. when its done, Dale tole me the jetting will be good from like 0-6000 ft.....I can test ride it at 0-5000 ft this winter in 40-60F. It was feeling good all my ride just like it wasn't quite there yet...........I'm definitely looking forward to test ride # 2 with a larger main jet and the clip back up one slot

But although I ride enough to be able to express my thoughts, I'm no experienced pilot that knows the finer things. I'll do my best. It's also pouring out side rain, wind and wet, plus I need to drive to LA for Christmas. will be a while till I can ride and report again...first I have to go pick up some jets.

I need to check my valves too while I'm in there messin around. It's a big deal for me to tackle simple things....I want the bike to just run.I need a bike maid, like I have for my house. I could crack the whip on her.......get out there biotch and change my main jet and check/adjust my valves.....then haul the bikeout and test ride it again for daddy. :whipitgood:

Considering that the Del Orto carb is an archaic relic of a round slide, it didn't have an accerator pump either. When jetted, there was no hesitation in acceration with the Del Orto.

Truth be told:
Aware that Bob often rides @ elevation I opted to install a #150 main jet (same as the 41). Unfortunately I failed to seriously contemplate just how cold it gets this time of year in the mountains of Northern California. :oops:

i was on a 158 at sea level when my bike had just the cam. 148-150 but it's tuned right up now.

I picked up 3 main jets yesterday, 160,162 and 165.......small differences but heck Dan had em so I bought them all. I'm gonna install the 162 and raise the clip one to the 5th slot. The bike was so not happy at middle clip and 150 mj, that for now I'm convinced it needs fuel, so I'll start with a 162 and that 5th clip

I'll do this as soon as I remove that damn pencil. At least I know how to can get to, drop, rotate and jet a carb. I'm not a complete useless desk bound pencil pushing engineer. :lol:

After a few sessions of removing and reinstalling the carb I think you'll find the worst part of the process is getting that rubber elbow boot back into position. In other words it ain't so bad.

I would suggest you focus on the trying different jets for now and save the needle clip adjustments for later. Also good to check the color of the spark plug. Dark colors usually indicates a rich condition. Glowing head pipes usually indicate a lean condition.

Pilot Jet is in play under 20% throttle.

Main Jet is in play over 20% throttle.

thank you but, the bike ran pretty good at 6th clip and 150, so if I go to a 160 or 162, Ill need to move the clip, confident of that.

These BeRG boots are so suptle easy to work with. Im ok with Carb work

as a general rule (that i made up so lineaweaver can argue the toss on this) if you go up 5 or down 5 on the MJ you are worth .5 a clip position in the other direction. so a 160-162MJ will leave you back at C4 and as happy as larry.

well if that's fairly accurate approximation of my situation, and my gut says it is from past jetting experience, what my goal is to get the clip off of 6c and back up some towards 4. I suspect because of the running quality of my 150mj , 6 th Clip ride test day, that simply upping the mj size a full 10 from 150 to 160 without a corresponding clip rise at least one step to 5the C, then I will be rich.

with that 10 = 1C approximation all I will be doing with a 160/162 and moving from 6 th to 5 th C is an equal trade so to speak. IF this new mix does anything different will be my judgement come riding day.

since this change is so minor perhaps I should go with a more radical change at first with a 165 and 5thC..........or just go 160 and leave it at 6c but I'm going with Dale's first reaction.........well actually his second, he first gave me a dissertation on how to tune my bike, when I replied HELP I need a course of action he then suggested the 160 and 5 th clip as a starting point.........my gut feel to be honest is you jetting gurus like to be as lean as possible and since too lean was my problem, I'm choosing to over shoot dale's second prescription by a tad and go with 162, 5th C as my next test ride. :)

that was my raw thinking now exposed for commentary......but this is my move. I can change it again. I danced arround a lot on my husky jetting too............I'll get there. This is something I understand the basics enough to feel confident I can do it.

without experience, eduaction, a computer, dyno and hydrocarbon analyser all I can to is adjust and ride it.

Ex WR400 FCR 39 spare jets and the \'wheel collar\' or \'block connector\' used for the Taffy mod to limit the stroke of the accelerator pump. Current settings on 98 FE501 are Pilot Air Screw/Jet - 60, Main Air Jet - 160, Starter Jet - 60, Pilot Jet - 38, Main Jet - 165, Needle - ELN, clip 3, Fuel Screw - 1.25, Float - 9mm, Accelerator Pump - 1.0 mm stroke, Altitude - 800m

No matter what choke jet I've tried I can't get it to start with the choke so I upped the AP stroke to 1mm from .6mm. 7-10 pumps per 1-2 kicks when cold generally does the job. Cold days can be a pain though. It sure would be nice to have a working choke. I know, cold start enrichener, not choke.

If I could start it without the AP then I'd be keen to try a Lineweaver needle and disable it. In the meantime.....

When hot starting is 1-2 kicks. Doesn't stall unless I stuff up and runs great.

These settings were Taff's recommendations about 3 years ago. I've gone backwards and forwards and ended up pretty much where Taff said to start. Thanks again Taffy.

installed the 162 main jet and 5th clip setting

bike is running great. 200ft, 60F, rode the bike around block, starts first kick, rides great, runs smooth no pops no bogs all clean

I think we got it, we'll report at 4000 ft next week.

FS back at 1.5 turns.

all good. Ready to ride>
