stupid noobie questions. battery hookup, stock handguards

just got the bike (05 fe550) delivered and deboxed it during lunch. i was scratching my head looking at the battery. it looks like i should slip the little teeny rectangular 'nuts' into the battery terminals, then screw the battery wires in from the top. naturally, the screws don't actually reach all the way to the little nuts. i was able to stick a tiny screwdriver under the nut to lift it up to engage the threads. am i close? or am i exposing my complete ignorance about e-start?

question 2, it looks like the stock handguards might screw into the pivot points for the brake and clutch lever??? but then all the cables and such seem to get in the way. i'd love to see a pic or a clear explanation of how those things go on. or i might just bin 'em and get some proper wrap-around guards.

Yup, you need to get a small blade or something underneath the battery nut to lift it to make contact with the battery terminal bolt while turning. It's a small pain in the neck.

Not sure about how your handguards are fitting. Need to see what's going on with that install.

Q1, you did it right. Once they are in, push a little silcone glue in the space below the nut to keep them there for the next time.
Q2, they are attached to the perches.

I just want to congratulate you on becoming a full fledged member of the family Velo! I hope you enjoy your new bike and look forward to hearing about your rides and maybe even seeing some pictures.

By the way, I "binned" my stock handgaurds so the guy who ends up with my bike in a few years will have something shiney and new on his used bike!

For the battery terminal, my trick is to insert a folded piece of zip-tie (usually the end of a freshly cut one). Fold it over the back. It will push the nut up and keep it in place.

The stock handguards are barely ok for MX (and they don't make FCs anymore these days), I strongly suggest you upgrade to the Cycra Bend or the Enduro Engineering models.

I took am thrilled to see that Velosapiens now rides a Husaberg. Welcome to the blue and yellow side of the Force. You were a great guide in Moab and you're a great rider. You will surely use the Berg at its full potential.

Congrats on the new Berg! Next time I go back to Ely, I wont be the only berg owner in town. That local "harley" shop will treat you right. The owners are good people. The young guy behind the counter is very cool. He is a good rider, and knows where all the killer riding spots are. So be sure to hook up with him. I will be going back to Ely sometime this summer, and I'll be bringing a new berg with me. Have fun, and post a ride report!

I drill and tapped my Aluminum guards and mounted the stock brush guards to them.

haha, too late, big bob, but at least i searched for a bit first. fwiw, 35Degrees and 6500', the stock jetting starts and runs fine. i went a half turn richer on the fuel screw (2.5 turns out) for tomorrows ride, which will be down at 4000' or so.

hey, nevadadirtbiker, you must be talking about luke at Gone Wild. he is a nice guy, and pretty dang fast too. i think the fastest guy in town these days (since doc robertson is retired from racing) is now vern's son zach, an indian kid from out at Duckwater.

thanks for the pix of the handguards. those old ones are shaped a little differently, but i still might try doing something similar with EE aluminum guards.

Welcome to the fold Velo.

Don't worry about the OE 'flags' being weak, I've refused to put aluminum guards on my new bike and I kind of like the moto gig. I crashed few times, say lots, and broken zip ties being the only damage. One thing though is that I like my levers a long way in, so there is not much lever exposed, and I run the stubby clutch lever as well.

I use a small fold of paper to hold the nut up. But I like TMs silicone mod so he only fusses once, smart one, eh.

Really Mark, if you rejet to a richer needle you'll notice a substantial power increase in the 550, so I hope you still have Dale's kit on order.

I use the fastway fit handguard system on my 06 berg. Fits the Magura bars and T camp perfectly.

do you guys take the little rubber covers off the pivot of the brake and clutch? or put holes through them for the longer bolts of the guards? also it looks like where the ziptie goes the guard is actually still a ways from the handlebar in the one or two pics where i thought i could see. is that right? so the zip ties aren't super cranked down, are they?
i'll probably put the stock guards on for a while at least. keep the cactus and stuff out of my knuckles.

yeah If i get your question right, take the stuff off and use the longer bolts for the stock brush guards. Mine came with stock brush guards but dealer gave me pins to replace the bolts if I remove the brush guards. it's a real straight forward install

You need to remove the rubber covers, they do leave the pivot more vulnerable to dirt, but the guard shields them also.

I think the ties are meant to go the hoses only, but a crahs can pull the hoses and perhaps cause damage. THE best thing to do is tie the guard back to the barr for the most sturdy support.

As far as Red Green is concerned, since he is the God Father of duct tape, why does he use a snowmobile instead of a dirt bike? Duct tape is the most useless thing on a snowmobile.........

You can actually use duct tape on a bike. OH well Sled Ed rocks......

You are in great, great town. There are sooo many really nice people there, and they will become treasured friends. I actually edited out Lukes name earlier, as well as Kelly and Raymond..I had felt a litttle hesitant about posting thier names in a public forum..but what the hell. They are AWESOME folks, and I am proud to count them all as friends. As for Luke, have you ridden with him? You should ride along side him as he does his 5th gear wheelies at 60mph, and GOES AROUND TURNS! He will ride a fire road on the back wheel. Just unreal. I felt completely inadequete after riding with him!!! LMAO! Just kidding around :D And Vern is such a cool guy, he is so helpful and kind, and it shows in his kids too. Great folks! I miss Ely a lot. Well, good luck getting that bike set up. Lets us know how you liked moab!

haven't done a real dirt ride with him, but we started in front of the little 4-strokes at the last race, it wasn't long before zach and luke and some kid from down south went flying past me, kicking up a ridiculous cloud of dust. last year luke got a flat at the first race of the year, and still passed my right near the end, and shoveled about 3 lbs of wet sand down the front of my shirt and into my mouth when i was trying to get back around him.
