Strange rebound adjuster?

Hi all!
Recently started to adjust my suspension on my 2003 FC550. Looking in the manual it says default rebound on rear suspension should be about 25 clicks. Problem is i only have 10 Clicks ?? And i can't feel any difference 1 click versus 10 clicks.
It's still ok to drive but it feels like the rebound doesn't work. Any ideas? I'm thinking its out of gas, but i still would be able to adjust more than 10 clicks right?

maybe this is useless to you, our bikes are so different but just a thought, when i was setting my suspension i had a similar issue when setting the adjuster at the bottom of the shock (done remember which is compression or rebound at the moment) but it would also not click as i turned it all the way up then back down a few times trying to feel the click it started to work, like there was grime or grit jammed into it preventing me from hearing or feeling the clicks, once it started to work it felt ok....maybe you could try to make sure its blown out good and something isnt preventing the clicky detent thing from clicking?

hopefully that makes sense, maybe were not even talking about the same adjuster.....

Yes it's the adjuster at the base of the rear shock. It looks clean but i it's worth a try with some compressed air to get some dust away from the valve. I can't hear the clicks but i feel them about 1/4 turn /click. If i compress the rear end it should rise slowly, well it does'nt, no matter how many clicks in or out i turn. I will give it a good cleanup tomorrow and we will see.

I thought that about mine too, i really have no idea how it works inside there if there is a detent of some sort or something totally different, i thought mine was old and work out then it just started to work, maybe someone else who knows somethings about suspension will elaborate...

i thought about asking the same question when it happened to me but then it started working....luck

your rebound needle is stuck probably. there is probably little you can do about it.

basically that screw you turn is like the idle screw. it is tapered and as it goes in and out a kind of knitting needle goes up and down in the shock shaft at right-angles to your rebound screw. well that has got stuck up and in the shock shaft.

you could possibly at a 'nothing to lose' unscrew the nut that surrounds the screw and then poor WD40 in there?

realistically though it is probably seized. if you were in the UK I could do it (as any shock specialist can) but that is where you're at.

just think how shagged out that 200cc of oil is anyway? you've beenm meaning to service that shock for years!

That makes sense, the rebound was at it most clockwise position when i bought it. It must have stuck in that position. Well i guess it was time to overhaul the shock anyway...
Thanks!

I had the same problem awhile back.
Remove the shock, position it on a flat surface with the screw facing up, and as Taffy stated, remove the nut that surrounds the screw. I poured motor oil in the cavity every morning for a week till I finally got the full clicker range.
What ever you do, don't force the screw. It's a very fragile part and will snap off- then your really screwed!
I used motor oil rather than a solvent based lubricant, didn't want to possibly damage any O rings that are in there.

good idea. it is a kind of rusty crud problem and as you say: solvent abuse is never a good idea!

My brain finally started working after 3 cups of coffee, and I remembered there's a fix for this.
Factory Connection makes a sealed rebound nut for a WP shock that's supposed to keep the crud out..

yes I've just bought a shock off an idiot with this rebound set up. looks a good idea.

Finally finished with the shock, turned the adjuster in and out for 10 minutes.
It was not in the bottom, it was stuck about 2 full turns from bottom. Now i get about 30 clicks and it raises slowly if i turn adjuster in. Service still needed but atleast it works for now!!
Thank you guys!
