Starting on kicker or e start help or its for sale

It should start on the button.

No throttle. Choke if it's cold outside.
Hold decomp lever all the way in.
Press and hold starter.
Let it spin 3-4 times and release the decomp lever.

Turning the idle up before hand should help.
If the valves are tight, that would make it hard to start.
Also if the jetting is way off.

Just what to start off by saying

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR THE HELP.
no i have not managed to start it yet :( But i still appreciate the help.

Idle: yes that is actually the only way i could start it on the button when it was warm, let it spin a bit then drop the decomp lever, it was still hit and miss but it worked most of the time.

Like i said the mechanic stuffed the button so i need to fix that before i can play with the button start again.

Yesterday i recorded my attempt to start it so i could watch it back n see where i go wrong.
I think its a power thing, it stops short ov going to the bottom.
Gf home 2day so ill get her to record n post it.

I have tried afew ways with bits throttle to start, choke no choke etc basically have tried each of the suggestions separately.
not even a hint of life. but if im not turning it over quick/hard enough that would explain why.

So the mechanic adjusted the following:
- check and adjusted valve clearance
- replace spark plug
- pulled apart & cleaned the carby
- readjusted the jetting as it was running rich
- turned the idle up (about 200rpm)

so that cover pretty much everything going back thru all your suggestions.
and like i said he started it 3 times infront of me no problems.

The bike runs great. idles fine, very responsive etc

n have another go today and get the video cam out

my experience? easier when valves are adjusted correctly. I tried "cheating" by not going all the way to the top of the stroke. Got away with it on occasion, but it's really bad form. I've gotten "better" at it but I still need to practice button discipline (ie, just kick it, no button). Simply stated, I empathize with you . . . but you can totally get it down and never have to worry about it again.

I have a 2008 FS650 and my battery died a few years ago so i have to use the kick start.
I use the bike very little, but even after 6-8 months without starting it, I have no problem.
I allways use the choke when it is under 20°C outside. NEVER touch the throttle before it starts. If I touch it, is very hard to start.

I see people say hot and cold. What do you mean with hot/cold? In Norway 15°C is hot :)

Yesterday i recorded my attempt to start it so i could watch it back n see where i go wrong.
I was going to suggest that, since (as Goose said) I am also tempted to cheat and not let the lever come all the way up and only noticed that on the video.

I've been trying to forget the existence of the magic button whenever I go for a ride and it usually starts at the 4th-6th kick, but I'm still a noob anyway. It's way easier when it's hot though.

u'll have to be nice to him pilot... on other hand u mite get away wif couple of beers....:grab:
:D

just playing around wif mind ... make it easyer on starter motor? if its weak? pull decom..lever in part way, hit the starter button... then let lever out....take the pressure off??? repeat it if need to?
