Okay guys

Im pretty new to all this dirt bike stuff.
Got a FE650 '04 afew month ago. Love the bike.

BUT I CANT START IT :furious::furious::furious::furious:

So this is my 1st dirt bike (last bike was a honda h100) so im sure its me and not the bikes fault.

I can normally start it with the elec start when its cold (omg look at all ur faces lol)
but when its warm it just wont fire up.

It has just been to the KTM dealer (n wow do i hate mechanics, shows how desperate i am). (got it back today)
He did afew carb adjustments new plug etc. He started it 3 times infront of me and explained how to use the kick starter etc

I got her home n i still cant do it (I live on a huge hill so actually its not a problem as she clutches fine lol)

I have watched all the Utube videos and things but it still just wont fire up for me

PLEASE PLEASE if you have any ideas on how i can get it to start easier PLEASE PLEASE tell me

I have given it till the weekend if i cant sort it, it goes on ebay with a tear in my eye.
but i cant have a bike that i cant stop anywhere then on a huge hill, thats just silly:giggle:

n 'easy start' does not work either. i tried that, cause i thought a can of that is easy enough to carry around... but no go

Takes time & practice.... Im only a little fella 168cm.. 73kgs
I'll need a milk crate wif a kick .....why use it when got the button,
Try slow kick over the kick starter till get hard "coming on compression stroke" just pass hard spot get that notch then big full kick , if pass hard spot ,k/ lever all soft gone to far,
I've seen big guys far bigger than me couldn't even start xr 600 , kick so hard , used up all the suspension.
Try kick fr side if ur use to ur other leg
Ow ... Ok.. thou just ur kicking style ... If button hard or not working? Mite need get looked at

thanks
im 180cm 90kg (not small lol)
Have been finding the compression stroke then go a fraction past it (mech advice)
He also did mention the be a bit higher then it (he stode on the fence) I have not tryed tha t as yet. but worried what will happen if out and cant find something to stand on.

I have been using my right leg (poor stand) have not given it a go standing over the bike as yet

Starting bike

I found over the years the easiest way with husabergs is to make sure it is correctly tuned.
Then if kicking it over I generally slowly kick it through most of the stroke, then give it a quick dab on the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the stroke and it starts first time every time for me., without kicking the crapper out of it.
Electric start I use choke just a one slight touch of throttle , let it go and then hit the button.

I don't want to overload your thread with [my own] videos but guess what, I've been on that boat as well! ;)

So I'll just leave here 3 videos I did of the sessions of practicing, because that's all there is to it, practice! I'm not an expert, but don't be afraid of it and try to listen to what she's trying to tell you, instead of just trying to yelling at her (what I was doing in the first video).

Hope it helps

with the choke on or any throttle the starter motor struggles to turn it over at all
and the mechanic stuffed the wiring (said it was allways like that) so i need to do some work on it before the elec starter will even work again (did i mention i h8 mechanics lol)

watchin the videos, maybe i have to be more patient, when the mechanic started it it started 1st time very time.
I tried 3 times in a row and was ready to roll it off a cliff

ill have afew drinks, (mellows me out) and give it another try 2morrow

Hey Stoln,
Please don't get frustrated, it will take some practice but if you get it right the ride will be very rewarding.;)

Grtz Rens

p.s.Learn and watch from Old man.;)

Technique and practice. You don't just walk up and kick them like a 125. Mine needs zero throttle. If i give it any throttle I will end up with a very sore foot or ankle as it wi kick back like a mule. Once you figure it out it is easy

Like everyone said take time...

I could not start my bike for the life of me when i got it... Specially the whole left foot kick...

I use e-start when I am exhausted at the end of the day...

I pull the choke when cold slowly kick it a over softly, then find where the kicker is at the very top and with pressure... Kick with your leg and she goes...

When hot, I pull the air choke thing and find the top center again and one kick again...

FE 550

Thanks

I tried again today with the help (hot n cold) but i just cant do it
not even once
i have the day off 2morrow n if need b ill spend all the day on it (if i have a kick starter left lol) or a leg :)
like i said i love the bike, no question. BUT i h8 2 say it, but i think if i cant master this one, sports bike is my next option.

anyone know how to change the "i ride:" under my name to "i try n start" lol

All these good pple helpful tips
& still can't ?
Start swearing... Joking
Always sumthing to raise ur self if needed.. if in bush... Eg..
Logs, ruts, rocks,, on street gutters, banks, name a few

What is your staring ritual?

I've had luck with gas on, choke on
Ignition off
Pull manual decomp lever and kick ten times
Turn on ignition
Slowly kick till you come to tdc. Then pull decomp and slightly kick a bit more (an inch or so)
Let the kicker come back up all the way
Give a mighty kick.

You should get something

Just run next to your bike, jump on it, and try to kick start it while slowly rolling forward..
It works for me.. Or i'll just run next to it, jump on it and put it in second gear, and jump down while drop the clutch.

You don't need a big hill ^^

If you try to start it over and over and over and over again, you will have troubles getting it started

sweet well today is the day.
Ill play the decompression lever,
and standing higher then it.

Tollum - is that in gear or in neutral kicking it when its rolling
And BTW Oh yes it needs a big hill to clutch it, im 95 odd kg even in 4th gear rolling at 10-15km/h jumping down on the seat as i release the clutch its a 50-50 if the wheel will just lock up or actually turn the motor over (on tar).
I have been stuck with it twice now first time i would do the run with it and find a small hill and the second i let the clutch go it would just stop dead. 5km down the road i found a huge hill to clutch it on
2nd time - ended up getting towed by a car to try n clutch it, but it was to sketchy, couldnt get it to turn the wheel (without me coming off). jumper leads of the car n 10min later got it start with the electric start (just)

Im guessing there is no such higher power starter motor i can stick in it?
cause on the starter button now when it hits tdc the starter struggles to turn it over. Sounds like it has a flat battery (battery is brand new and charged, wiring has been checked)
I think thats y it wont really start on the electric starter.

Well before i started to ramble on,,what i was gonna say is, its a rainy day so a good excuse to spend some time in the garage KICKING :) :) the bergy

Hopfully my next post will be this n this worked.

So is it too early to ask how much you want for your non starter......?

Just a thort...... when you try to bump start your bike, do you kick it over to the correct place (decompressed and slightly past TDC) or do you just push off down the hill with no prep?
My 650 will bump in 2nd easy.....
4th gear can be hard to start in unless you can get some serious speed (your big hill).
Technique is all you need to kick these bewdys into life.
Do you prime the cylinder with a squirt or two from the pumper?
Have you checked the valve clearance? as incorrect clearances cause starter motor issues (noted somewhere on here).
For what its worth.....
Gas on
Choke on (only when cold)
kick slowly to just past TDC
reset kickstart to the top (for full length kick)
two squirts on the throttle
One good kick and the beast speaks........ Bwrap dugaduga

Here's my ritual:
Cold:
Choke on
Fuel on
No throttle
Prime the cylinder by "rolling" it over 5 times or so
Find the previously mentioned "sweet spot" just past TDC
Allow lever to return to top (mine clicks when auto decomp resets
Aim for the floor with left foot. (Kick like you got a pair)
Usually fires first kick. Clean carb and filters are a must, as is proper valve adjustment

Warm:
No throttle
No choke
Find the sweet spot
Lever to the top, at the click
Kick with gusto
If it doesn't start first kick, roll it over a few times & kick again

Hot
A very very very slight amount of throttle
No choke
Sweet spot
Lever to the top, click
Try to put the lever in the dirt

Mines a '96, if I can do it, anyone can.:D:D

Roll in neutral and just try to kick it, it's the easiest way for me.

I'm 60 kg and can roll start my bike, asking it isent a dirt road.

Once you fired the bike up, it runs normally? Since you got so much troubles starting it, it might be a failure on the bike aswell
