Hi there everyone,I'll give you the run down on what I've done to my beloved Husa.........Replaced battery with 7A Yuasa, replaced starter motor, replaced stator, Electrex World SEM replacement, fitted iridium spark plug, adjusted valve clearances, stripped the carb, replaced the throttle cable.Ive still got an unreliable starting bike from cold.Just realized I have a missing mixture jet tube under the pilot jet,is this worth fitting to the bike and what does it do????.I've got a spark it just seems the carb is so fickle,3 pulls on the choke, don't leave it on and don't twist the throttle, used to work a treat, now sometimes it starts on the button other times not a chance.Sometimes a wet plug sometimes a dry plug no consistency, could this mixture tube be the holy grail ?
HELP,GETTING FED UP

ch3eck the emulsion tube for ovality by pulling it and laying the needle inside it - then hold to the light.

may well be ovalised. may want to replace anyway.

chock jet blocks easily

yes get that jet! makes a big difference - so owners say!

we have a completely new jetting set up available in the doc - at your risk BUT those that did it - love it!

froggy and joeusa to name but two!

your auto decomp might not be that good.

tappets are everything!

also do the ignition timing mark check as my 400 was 8d out.

regards

Taffy

As per Taffy, on my 02 650 I had the same starting problems.

Replaced the Needle and emulsion tube and bob ur uncle, fannies ur aunt and **** is your best friend 4 eva.

Mine also has the mixture jet tube.

Good luck

Thanks guys I'll fit the mixture tube, sounds like a no brainer.Anyone know whether the carb is set up to take it or do I need to tap it ?.Taffy do you mean the needle jet when you technical guys refer to the emulsion tube ?.Regarding my non standard telectrex stator there seems to be a distinct lack of timing marks any ideas ?Finally what valve clearances would you reccomend ?

The pilot jet hole is threaded so the mixture jet tube will fit right in. I had similar starting issues with my '03 FE400, added the mixture jet tube. What a difference a $7.00 piece of brass will make. I also have a sparks rewound stator, and my flywheel mark was off as well.

Correct Matty there aint none they just tell you to set it how your old one was, how proffenional is that.
You will have to make your own, but there again there is nothing to scribe a timing mark on.
If you look in the Doc I think it tells you how many degrees you need to be looking at I think it is around 36 at full advance. But you will need a degree disc to set up the new timing mark.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Sparks.

tappet clearance is in the doc at 1/6th of a turn oprn from pinched closed.

yehy needle jet thingy is the technical name!

Help! When I start it, it revs really high without open the throttle. I let it idle and waiting the revs to fall, but they didn't. I did not adjust the idle, it worked fine a week ago. Then I used the decompressor and kicked a lot of times, start it again and it did it again, full revving with the throtle (and of course the choke) clossed. What can it be?

Oh, it's a fe400e 2002

After it warms up adjust the idle. Then adjust your fuel screw.

you have trapped the throttle cable somewhere so you must release it!

deliberately open the throttle fully open and let go....you should hear a 'cluck' as it closes. if not it is stuck open somewhere.

@husabutt
I do not want to mess with adjusments because nothing changed since last ride when it worked fine. There is something else going on

@Taffy
I can hear the cluck. The throttle feels free. Any other ideas?

You might have an air leak somewhere. Get it started, lower the rpm's as much as possible using the idle screw adjustment and spray a light mist of soapy water around the cylinder and intake tract. If it starts bubbling and the RPM's change suddenly you have found your air leak. I would check the carb boot to the cylinder first. Are the bolts tight?

Well, there seems to be no air leak. I checked all the pipes and gaskets, they seem fine.

Today after removing the tank for the checks and then put back, it was difficult to start the bike. Kick many many times and in some kicks I could smell gas. Eventually it started. When I keep the throttle closed it works in idle. When I open the throttle IT WILL NOT IDLE after I close it, for a minute. And when it finally idles, it cuts out. Any guesses?

I think the first order of business is to take your carburetor off and clean it inside and out.

In fact I would do a complete fuel system overhaul. Drain your tank and clean it with the above degreaser or equivalent. Replace all the fuel lines including your gas cap vent line. Purchase two new fuel petcocks as they are not rebuildable and purchase a carb rebuild kit including a new needle and atomizer. Use the degreaser on the inside of the carb, rinse thoroughly and blow everything dry with compressed air. Get some carb vent tubing and replace all the vent lines. You are missing a vent hose in picture #2.

new data.

I put out the spark plug and it was full black oil. I cleaned it and the bike started with choke easily. It does not start without choke. Rode it for a hundred meters and put out the spark plug again. It was black. This is serious right?
I also noticed that the engine turned hot very fast, only in a 100 meters. The piston is almost new, maybe 100 km.
The oil on the spark what can mean? Can it happen because of bad valve clearence? Or it definately has to do with the piston?

the black is not oil, it is an indication of a too rich fuel mixture. listen to husabutt.
