This is a new sprague, tried adding a new spring also... no love. Engine is cold, spark plug removed, turns over very easily by hand with the kickstarter.

Is this normal with a cold engine??? I know they are a re-starter... and it generally works pretty well once the engine is warmed up.

A couple of questions.
1) FC 550 did not come with an estart. What year and model did you use when sourcing your parts?
2) What model of manual decompression cam are you using?
3) Have you tried taffy's sprag kit yet?
4) What is the current break away torgue of your current sprag?

1. Not sure what model/year the torque limiter and sprague came from... Taffy provided them, already modified.
2. Not sure what it has for manual decomp... it looks like a dutch clog auto-decomp is already in the engine, it's in pretty good shape, just showing a very tiny bit of wear on the very tip.
3. yup. Taffy provided the modified parts originally, and I just put a new spring and shims in it tonight.. no difference.
4. break away torque on the sprague? no idea... but I did check the break away torque on the torque limiter, it required two shims to get up to 25 ft-lbs... the second shim put it over the top of my 250 in-lb torque wrench.

I've got a turn-tech lithium battery in the bike... it puts out a bit over 12 volts... any chance that it "hits too hard" when the starter first engages? enough to make the sprague slip? the starter motor is from a Yamaha R6.

Thanks for the help!

Yes I misspoke, I meant the breakaway on the torque limiter.
There are lot's of thoughts on this issue. When in doubt check the basics. Timing, valve adjustment, base idle (1800 rpm).
I have heard the theory that too much battery is a bad thing as well.

It is NOT normal when the engine doesn't crank whit plug removed, regardless of autodecomp etc.

That sprague is really bad !!! Buy yourself a new insert for it, they are not that expensive. The outer & inner part must be in good condition offcourse.. If the "rollers" on the insert are knackered with flat-spots nothing will make it good again. IMHO !

Is it really an brand new part ?? If so, I would say that it is either not right type, or not assembled correctly. Rollers in the right way ?? all of them ?? Or maybe Inner & outer parts totally worn out ??

agree with Anders.

needs a new sprague bearing itself and move the spring from the kit over to the new bearing.

My sprague was slipping and i ordered complete sprague with gears from 04 husaberg for upgrade.
But now I'm not sure i did well 8O ,will it fit my 01 :?: or do i need torque limiter from 04?

it'll fit, but i would think all you needed was the inner part. plus, most of the time on an '04, it's the torque limiter. good luck.

Parts arrived today, and i found out that my old sprague was missing needle bearing 8O.
New fits perfect

Hi
You have -01 bike and 04 sprag with gears,do you mean with inner and outer gear only? No whine or any other noise thats not suppose to be there? I tought that its mandatory to exhance ALL gears (clutch basket and torq limiter atleast)

And to all..
Is there any advantage to use 04 parts as opposed to 02 parts?

I have 02 fe 501 with fzr600 starter, tightened torque limiter and slipping sprague thats driving me nuts! One problem is worn auto decomp lobe but this sprague cant hold even when manual decomp is pulled.
And i just cant kickstart this thing when its cold. Hot,first or second but cold, now way.

welcome iipee to UHE.

please put your location in?

the 01 freewheel in the later gears 'whine' but i'm not sure it is true the other way around?

there are two freewheels: 2002 and 2003+

regards

Taffy

Thanks,location updated;)
so 03up is better than 02 and interchangeable in total?
Better dig deeper from pocket then. I will some day end up driving this thing more than repairing it. Some day...

I have complete outer inner and spraguue from 2004 and R6 starter no torque limiter ,now i am installing 2004 autodecomp. My was the same when cold bitchy to start, on hot first kick.
R6 starte and new complete sprague with gears and bearing cost me about 195 Pounds
I hope it was wort it.

If my disasters would be any help to others, install torque limiter as soon as possible. Two times broken teeth and both times they end up in timing chain and broke it...I thought that -02 had torque limiter but it was old model without it.
That is if you dont have it at all ofcourse...
I believe that failing stator was reason for backfires but tq limiter would have saved a lot after that.

if you have a solid torque limiter it means it is from a 2001 engine. if all the other parts are also from a 2001 then you must use an early 2001/2 freewheel.

secondly, study every single tooth on the clutch basket very, very, very carefully. one small 'dingggg' from your breakages, one bent tooth abd the freewheel teeth will last under 30 seconds.

I had a customer get through 4 last year before he saw the dinged one, he was from the north UK. another from the west got through 3. i recommmend that you 'felt tip' all the teeth on the basket. a dinked one won't wear evenly.

if you find a dinked one - use the 4" grinderette!

This thing has been imported here at september -02 and used in six days enduro Jablonec at same month, but that obviously doesnt proof anything about what parts it was built from.production number is below 400,dont know how much they made these back then.
So only early free wheel part then,no outer and inner cos they are okay.
But IF PolandHusa succeeds assembling silent (relatively speaking..)engine,I believe its doable with three parts (inner, outer and freewheel) since his is 01 and should be the same as mine then.Guess ill wait and see...however wiki says:Noise from left side cover. Must get the correct sprague bearing for your model or they make a real rackit! Pre '03 spragues; #HB250248, post '02; #HB250273. See this UHE Forum Thread.Unfortunately that thread doesnt exist anymore.
My gears has held their teeth after i installed tq limiter and sparks stator but you have point, parts that came with bike included broken clutch basket too_One teeth was damaged.

My suggestion is get tq limiter and shim it per instructions here, before its too late;)

That grinderette made me do some google surfing...;)

You did not understanded me i installed: whole 2004 stuff in
20 800.40.020.000 .......03 FREE WHEEL GEAR 03 (outter)

24 0405 101310............02 NEEDLE BEARING K 10X13X10 02

25 800.40.025.000 ........03 FREE WHEEL HUB 03 (inner)

26 800.40.026.000........ 03 FREE WHEEL 03 (sprague)

Now i got to buy TQ limiter

Yes i did get it, but taffy said that early has different parts, wiki warns about noises and 03 has different clutch hub.Its possible that gear angle or something was changed and that results some unwanted noises etc.Thats why i rather wait that your engine actually runs before i order bunch of parts,Since i believe that local ktm shop doesnt have them at shelves so i could compare early vs new side by side.Hope it works.

With search i found this:
As Berger says there was a change of the gear cut betwee 01- and 02 models. The part referred to as the "free wheel inner" may bethe cause of the noise. We had one in the shop a couple years ago with the same noise as you describe. The two part # are 250 248-01 for the 01 gear cut and 250 273-01 for the later gear cut.
