slight change in cases

having recently had cause to be offered a 2002 left and a 2003 right case i was unable to fit the clutch gear on whatsoever. careful measuring shows up that the crank's boreline was moved forwards around .004" (0.1mm) from '02 to the '03 model.

several people have said that the gears needed forcing in during '01 and '02 and so moving the boreline forwards toward the front wheel would appear to have solved the issue.

I thought engine cases were always a matched pair - ie they are fitted together & machined as one. You replace one you have to do both together.

Are you implying that it is OK (or at least up till you found the shift in boreline) to swap them independently?

no, it's not a good idea. i was offered them as a matching pair. supplied by the customer.

needs be as needs must.

thing is.

now you know!
