Should i change the spring of my rear shock absorber

Read some stuff on KTMTalk about heavy guys and the rate of the springs they use, which made me thinking about changing my reaar spring. I'm about 240lbs and on my 2004 FE 550 is the default 71-90/260 spring. If i look at the owners manual, there is an other option for a stiffer 81-99/260 spring, but these numbers don't make any sense to me. On KTMTalk, they mention a spring rate of 10.4 and up for my weight, so i was wondering if the stiffer 81-99/260 spring would be sufficient for me, or if there are any alternatives that i can use on this bike.

if ever there was a case of "read it in the doc" this is it!

come on mate! there' nothing that can be said here that would be half as good as the doc.

Taffy,

Your right. Did scan through the rear spring document, but gave up once i got to the shim stack, reservoir and valves parts as the doc completely lost me there. So i didn’t get to the important part. But anyway i found the strait rate codes now, which was what i wanted to know.

Still would like to hear from some of the heavier guys here what brand / type of spring they use on their bike if compareble, and if they’re happy with their set up.

Hi

To give you an idea, I am 102kg's (224lb) with no gear, my suspension has been setup using stiffer springs front and rear.
Front uses Eibach springs 974.044.1 0.44kg/mm
Rear uses Eibach spring 896.0088.1 8.8 spring rate
My forks were revalved for rocky conditions
My static sag was set correctly with myself fully geared and I find this setup very good
From memory both front and rear springs are 1 selection stiffer than standard, I only find that I bottom out occasionally on bigger jumps which are rare, I am more concerned with being able to use the full travel of the suspension during my normal riding conditions.
Check out the Eibach web site using Ktm as the make to get the details of the springs

My suspension was setup by the Australian suspension legend Frank Pons so I am confident it is setup well.
Hope this helps

i'll swap you my '02 fx650 springs for your fe springs. i'm using this bike as a dualsport, and its way too stiff for a cruiser. works good if you ride the bike hard.
the rear is a 76-95 260 and should be a direct swap. the fronts are 044w 5.10.

Ned,

Thanks for the offer. But i live in the Netherlands, and found that shipping rates from / to the US are rather expensive.

SurfDude...I'm 230 lbs. without gear and have switched to a Race Tech P30 rear spring and 48 kg fronts... have not revalved yet but this setup seems to have made a huge improvement!

by the way weight without gear is pointless. weight with riding gear is what you need to do you calcualtions with

I'm setup for 115 kg with with gear and use a 9.7 straight rate rear and .46 in the front. Its al about getting the sag right. Without correct sags, it will never work as intended. A good guide for dirt bikes is 10% of travel static and 30-35% laden, front and rear.

it wasn't a criticism. he's right. he was offering advice - that's what this forum is for. as for the cork, you keep it, you use it.

sorry ragman didn't realise this was a private conversation and frankly **** off!!

you can discuss points of reference all day long but what is the point when the point of reference is wrong?

you weigh a pair of boots, and all the kit and it can add up to enough to change which spring you require if your running at the upper limit of your springs rating.

feel free to discuss your 'points of reference' just dont come crying here if the suspension is wrong.

this is easy to say on a web site but id say it to your face as well. so try to be a bit more polite when friendly advice is offered.

Hey guys, you don"t seem to get it or I don"t so I"ll stuff it and go my own way...Cheers!

good advice from a good (big) guy.

I have an 05 FE650. I weigh 210 lbs and set my race sag at 100mm. This put my spring preload at 10mm though and it needs to be no more than 5mm. So I went one heavier on the rear spring from the standard 80/250 to the 84/250. I went one up on me CRF450 with good results also. Remember that if you go 90 or 95mm race sag your going to be tightening down more on the collar and using up more preload. I go the recommended 105mm on the Honda . 100mm on the berg feels right to me.
