SEM strikes again!!!

Hi all

Friend of mine suddenly lost spark on his 1997 KTM620SC. Ignition is SEM and looks the same as mine(2003 FE501E).

After removing ignition cover, his stator had corroded and split. So, it seemed that the stator was the source of trouble, and so bought new stator.

Problem is still no spark.

To exclude CDI or aother wiring problem, put wires form my stator onto his bike and we got spark. next we put his stator in my bike and only got intermittent spark.

so either he has a faulty new stator or his flywheel has had it.

So, the question is, what can go wrong with the flywheel???it appears ok to look at, and i have not heard of one failing before.

Also, KTM will sell the stator by itself, while i know berg will only sell a stator with a new flywheel as well......is this the prob???

Any help appreciated

Have Fun

If your stator worked in his bike, and his stator would not work in your bike, then his new stator is defective.

Only problem I've heard of with the SEM flywheels is one had the magnets come loose & another got busted trying to pull it off.

I once had an outboard (~'75 model) where I left the flywheel off for a couple of months without the stator inside it. After reassembly it had no spark at normal crank speed, pull the plugs out & let it spin faster & it had spark. Got the ***** with it & left it (assembled) a fortnight. Tried it again - it worked OK & then never missed a beat??? Seems the magnets must have lost some of their magnetism without the stator in place to act as an iron core "keeper". I've since seen mentioned in old books that say not the leave magnets open for long without a keeper core in place.

Don't know if this could be a problem with the later magnets. If it is it might help explain why 'berg only sells stators & flywheels as pairs. I have no idea if KTM sell a flywheel without a keeper core inside?

thanks for the suggestions...........we can't work it out.

it's probably going to the dealer this weekend.

driving us nuts!!!

Have Fun
