Ride Report on my 00 FE501E with a SEM Stator rewound by Spa
Ride Report on my 00 FE501E with a SEM Stator rewound by Sparks.
The stator is better than the OEM was!
The stator Red-Black windings were open circuited when I sent it to Sparks.
It only took him a few days to fix it.
Here are the Stator measurements I made on the rewound stator:
Resistance measurements were Red-Black 3.08 K ohms, Red-Black 178 ohms, well within spec.
Spark Plug in Tests: E-start R-B 36.5 VAC G-B 4.03 VAC 6 compression revolutions
Spark Plug in Tests: Kick-start R-B 25.2 VAC G-B 2.1 VAC 3 compression revolutions (I was very tired).
On E-start I usually get 30 VAC on R-B and 3 VAC G-B on a good OEM SEM stator for a 99-03 Husaberg so this rewound stator was really putting out the voltage!.
I rode the bike for 3.1 hours today (91.9 miles) and it performed GREAT! No hiccups or pops and E-started on the first turn each time.
Here are 2 pictures. the alternator side is the original SEMs epoxy as Sparks didn't have any work to do there. The ignition side was coated with red epoxy by Sparks after he rewound the R-B, re riveted the grounds, soldered the grounding lugs to the top lamination, and dipped the ignition side in electrical varnish.
Here is a message Sparks sent me on the day he received the stator from me.

Hi Joe,
Your stator turned up this morning like you said it is open circuit on the source winding.
I have rewound and run it up on the test rig and she sparks up at low spark threshold
150 200 rpm. I have dipped the windings in varnish and it baking in the oven for three hours. Should get it potted tomorrow and back in the post Friday.
It also had an earth termination problem when I tested the trigger coil it was reading 210 Ohms I checked the resistance between black and earth and it was showing 43 Ohms.
The earth tag under the potting compound is just riveted to the laminations I have always thought this is not the best way to do it so once I have riveted it I solder the earth tag to the laminations this should stop any further earthing problems.
Best regards
Sparks.

I am very satisfied and happy for all of us who have older Bergs . We now have an alternate source for SEM stators.
I have been very frustrated with my 00 Berg because I had identical failures,( R-B open circuits) on the original and 2 replacement SEM Stators. I had 1 of them rewound by a person in Portugal, and it didn't work in my bike because he did not use the correct size magnet wire and the stator did not put out high enough voltages.
It was such a joy to ride it again, I love the 501 engine.
Thank you Sparks,
Joe
