rod, HC piston for 400

in my continued effort to extract more from my little FE400e i ask for the following info:

what length centre to centre is the 400 rod i have. i know that the L/E is 18mm and that all the larger models have a 20mm L/E.

have they made a rod (say for the earlier 501's) that is 1mm longer with the same L/E and B/E dimensions as mine?

secondly, is there a HC piston out there?

regards

Taffy

Hi Taffy,
I have constructed both 426 and 448 long rod engines based on the standard 350 / 400 stroke.

You may also achieve near 450cc from increasing the standard bore to that of 97mm.

Contact Husabomber as he has a Lineaweaver 450.

I do not have the data file handy . However, somewhere on this site I have already posted OEM Husaberg connecting rod dimensions.

Sincerely,
Dale

Ps
Husaberg connecting rod small end ID are common. A replaceable bushing being the difference in pin bore ID.

this was one in which you helped with the length of the rods in the 550 and 501 etc.

i understand about the bushing. what you're saying is that it's a common rod with a differing little end bush in for either the 400 or 470+ so i just need to know the 400 rod centre to centre. the rod has a different part number to the 470 and also 501/550.

i've just received a very air-ated and pok-marked big valve head. it appears after looking for a whole minute to have an extra 1mm (.040") of material on the head to facilitate full valve seat grip.

compression goes :(

Hi Taffy,
350, 400 and 470 shared a common rod length of 120mm.

The 400 / 470 have different part numbers as the small end bushing is smaller in the 400.

i would need a 121mm rod or an eccentric l/e bush but from this to 123mm is too far.

I have looked through the heaps of conrod catalogues that I have and I can't find any rods that are 121mm centres :( I can find 122.6mm with suitable bearing sizes. But thats probably no good to you.

So have you considered running a longer rod, say the Husaberg 123mm and a packer under the head, i.e. go up 3mm on the rod and 2mm on the head so reducing the effective deck heigh by 1mm. If you are interested in a packer I can draw up the file and get one laser cut fairly cheaply.

Alternatively have you considered a billet machined rod. I can get them custom machined for a little more than the price of an OEM Husaberg rod. If you buy 2 or more they are less than OEM rods. The cheapest way is to use plain bronze bearings both ends, but it is possible to put roller bearings in at one or both ends. I have successfully run a stroked KTM 525 with a billet rod and plain bearing at both ends.

You can get me at [email protected] if I can help in any way.

after doing some calculations tonight i worked it out that i'd have to take 2mm off the perimeter of the piston just to get in the original compression 'ball-park' figures.

realistically it's more like 2.5-3mm. unknown quantity is how much i must cut out of the piston for valve to piston clearance.

been here before. about the only difference is that the valves would clash with my old F2 ducati pantah.

not happy about the 'flatland' behind the two inlet valves. this is about 15mm wide in parts and would appear to slow the piston down.

seems to me that you either stand the inlets up about 1.5 degrees or you stick to small valves.

won't use a carillo dale as i want to use OEM due to the short bursts twixt corners.

will be in contact possibly about the 122.6mm con rod!

regards

Taffy
