I have an 03 300exc and just got a like new 2002 Husaberg 501.
I noticed it is much harder for me to ride i the woods than the 300 and tires me out quicker especialy in the arms . I ride in the tight woods of South AL and am much faster on the 300 but am wondering if the 4 stroke will make me faster since I am so much slower on it and just find it more tiring and cant manuever it like the 300 down tight twisty trails .
Have any of you had the same problem and did the 4 stroke help you out as far as making you faster on the 2 stroke because of the weight difference and handeling being different??

:D you will get faster on it , it's a case of confidence and getting used to the bike :D

and think of all the money you will save by not having to go to the gym :)

I just rode a 300exc last weekend and it is soooooo much faster than my husey 400. Not only faster, but also much more easy to ride. You can trial ride it over trees and out accelerate a 450 honda on the straights.

I have allways disliked 2-strokes, but my husaberg is now for sale....

The KTM should handle quicker and faster than the Berg because of the weight differential.

there is very little weight difference between the 300 and the husabergs. especially this years 300 with the e-start. I would imagine that the new 09 motor will improve upon the difference in handling and "feel" of the bike.

I wouldn't ride a KTM 300 even if I was faster on it, BUT very little weight difference to me is like a few pounds. 30 pounds difference is a bit more than "very little".

It is not a fair comparison, and even the new E-start 300's are still 25 lbs or more lighter than a Berg.

I am pretty sure i read in this months dirt rider that the 300 with the e-start was within a couple of pounds of the berg. I may be mistaken, but i distinctly remember thinking " damn that is a heavy two stroke.." after i read the article

Sneek - I've got a 300exc I have been racing for the past few years and have just got a FE450 - I'm using that in anger on the 22nd so I will be able to add to your comparison after then - be interesting to see how I find the difference, though I'm guessing that riding styles etc have to be a bit different on a 4 vs 2 stroke...

Not much help ATT so i will keep you posted.

the actual weight of a 300 ktm is 229 LBs the early bergs were very light , no balance shafts , battery or E start, and you can't compare the sound and grunt of a four stroke.

although two strokes are a lot of fun. and good for twisty riding, it depends what your preferred terrain is. :)

i used to race a honda cr 125 and in the open class it would run rings around the 250's
purely due to its handling.

but i would choose a 4 stroke every time for green laning. allthough i rather fancy a 300 exc :D

The actual wet weight (without gas) was 227 lbs for the 300 E-start in the Apr Dirt Rider. For the kind of riding I do I much prefer my old '96 Berg FE600e and my newer '04 KTM 525 (540) EXC over the 300 even after riding the 300 and the 4 strokes back to back, even though the 300 handles much lighter than the 4 strokes.

the 2003 exc was actually 228.6 lbs according to many write ups on the net but there are a few varying accounts of what weight they actually are if you look at a few more pages , for arguments sake shall we say that they weigh around 228 lbs :)

and yes i prefer the four strokes, i read that 2 stroke motorcycles are being phased out in 2010 because of emissions legislation , is this true :?

My 04 300 with bashplate, handgaurds and steering dampener weighs in at 105.9 kgs (233 lbs) full of all fluids but empty fuel tank.

I've had both the 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines on the scales during rebuilds and the difference between the 650 4t and the 300 2t is 10kgs- the 2 stroke is 10kgs lighter in the engine alone.

But the most important thing to remember is its not just the static weight difference between the 2- most of that heavier 4 stroke weight is made up of reciprocating and rotating masses which also have a big effect on the way a bike handles.

the dry weight of my 95 berg fc 501 (according to the web sites on the net) is 225 lbs dry. is this correct :eep:

So I did read it wrong. I guess thats what i get for trying to read it anywhere but the Throne. 8O .. That is the only chance i get to really think about what i am reading....

Note that the '08 KTM 300 has lost some weight compared to earlier models, and even the E-start model with battery is within 1-2 lbs of the earlier bikes.

Would definitely be interested to hear people's experiences riding both of these.

I have an 02 'berg at the moment, but the bike I really wanted was a 300EXC-E.
I've ridden a Gas Gas 300 and it felt noticable nimbler than the 'berg, but I wasn't really 'trying'. I also haven't, to be fair, tried any 'serious' woods stuff on the 'berg - don't want to go /too/ fast in most british green lanes with a horse around the next corner.

The 300exc-e is a beautiful piece of work, I would love to ride on, but I had expected that it would be quite tiresome to ride, but given all the comments made about the '09 Bergs handling (I thought my 05 550e was more nimble than my old KX125) I think I'll wait for some more four stroke force!
