Ride Groups

Just my 2cents, but if I rode 50 miles a day and had a good combination of scenic and technical, I would be happy, but I also do not know how quickly one can rack-up miles in this kind of terrain. I am looking for a vacation and a good time, not a test of how many miles can be racked up in four days.I am sure that others will fall into this category as well. Not a puss, just need to get away from here and have fun.

I'll second that

My friend and I would certainly like to get in on a Velo ride as that is certainly our style.

I can't wait to meet all you guys in person!

i'll lead some rides. there's another kind of group besides the ones listed, which includes folks like me. not necessarily blazing fast, but decent technical skills and a love of technical riding, unlikely to get stuck, and mostly riding (3-ish breaks in a 80-100 mile ride) rather than stopping for lots of breaks. brendan seems to fit into that group, and i'd guess johnf3 fits into that group too.

it appears at this point that i will be bringing the girl, so i'll probably want to lead 2 fun scenic interesting rides with her along, and 1 long hard fun interesting ride that'll probably be longer than she wants to do, especially sandwiched between 2 other pretty good rides.

note that the gps tracks in garmin and nat'l geographic format are still posted on the mighty motosapiens website. the link is in some other thread around here.

Bingo. Velo nailed it, although he pretty much is describing an "A" group if you ask me, if you look at the mileage per day he is proposing. I have no idea how easy or hard it is to rack up miles in Moab, though.

I went to an official KTM appreciation ride in Cloudcroft,NM last May that was guided just about perfectly. I rode with one of the "A" groups, and we rode at a good steady pace. We didn't have to worry about any in our group getting hung up on the technical stuff, but the pace was relaxed enough that everybody could stay together.
It made for a really fun ride.

I want to cover as much technical trail as possible, the harder the better, not worry about racing someone, and have a good time. I'll hook up with the like-minded riders when I get there, I figure. I can't wait--it's going to be a blast.

One more question. How far is it to the Five Miles of Hell trail, and would anyone be up for that if it is feasible?

That will be the kind of rides that I will lead. I hope to be able to go on at least one of Mark's rides as I do enjoy that kind of ride also. The long loop that I talked about is in the parks and would be mostly dirt road crusin to see secenry. Guys that have ridden with me before can attest that some times I go where it is kind of hard ( right Brenden) and some are just cruzs ( right Json) and some have a bit of both ( right Velo) but most of all the only reason I ride me bike is to SMILE and GIGGLE :D

These are also my thoughts guys. Perhaps the first day I would like a ride is tough, but in no means a race. I don't care how many miles we put on as long as everyone is having fun, not getting hurt or riding over their head. To me, this is more about the visit than the "I was on my bike at 8am and didn't get off till 6pm". If I want a 10 hr day, I'll do that at home, I'll drive that far to visit and see the guys I won't normally ride with.

As far as leading a group, I'll contribute as best I can to suit who ever wants to come. Just be forewarned, that I'll be eating Bobzilla's chilli and drinking beer, so following may be difficult due only to that.

As well, the two guys that I am travelling with, Nick and Jag33, spent week a year ago there and have a good idea of the area, so knowledgeable people won't be in a shortage.

see ya soon

John, five miles of hell, sounds like fun

I am a C rider that likes to occasionally leave the porch and run after the big dogs. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my velo and bobzilla rides. Well, except for one bobzilla ride, his Dante's Inferno tour of hades and back. Only thing it was good for was for survival war story material. I have an up to 180 mile bike range, and if I have bobzilla's pot roast in my belly, I can go for about 1/3 of a day of arduous riding without eating hardly anything.

As to the Lion's Back, it has always been private property. For nearly ever, it was not posted, everyone played on it. Now an RV park has appeared on the property, a cable has been placed across the start of "the Back", and it is only doable if the landlord permits. Bummer!

the trail head for 5moh is 7 miles off I70 at exit 131, so that's about 80-90 miles from moab. i won't have time for it this trip. it's quite a bit higher than moab, so march may be a little early, but i don't know what conditions are like this year.

anybody know how to get into contact with the landowner? that would be a great photo opportunity

Ride Group lists are being compiled and will be posted very soon.

we are missing one bit of info:

Everyone wishing to join a Thursday dual sport ride please respond. The ride will be 100+ miles and will be an easy scenic tour with photo ops. This is a very good ride for those who want to see the unique terrain and scenery without worrying about keeping up or going fast.

Some of the ride will be on public roads so license plates are 'advised'. Jeep roads and some single track is also included. Nothing too technical, just a fun ride to get into the spirit and see some neat country.

Stoveguy has the route layed out and you will be contacted with details when you post your name to be added to the list for this dual sport ride.

This should be an excellent chance to loosen up for more challenging rides on Friday and Saturday.

Time is short so sign up now!

BOSSMAS comes through

Hi guys, I wish there was a good place to stash gas and lunch for this ride, but alas there is not. The last time I did it I went with my brother and a Honda contingent most with XRs with the big gas tanks. I made it on a stock tank and bumming 3/4 of a gallon aprox. from my buddies. This time I have an under seat tank and am hoping to make it on my own. Just in case I will probably carry an extra gallon on me(unless of course Rick gets those bitchen big tanks in time) This is a great leisurely ride with some parts over looking the Colo, river and later in the ride the Green river, hell there is even out houses along the way. The road loops way out into the Canyon Lands Natl. Monument the views are incredible with many photo ops. Not technical at all just a chance to let the bikes strech their legs lots of 3rd & 4th gear nice warm up for METAL MASHER ! (not really as bad as it's name sounds) I really don't care how many want to sign up for this we could easily handle 20 guys or so . The more the merrier we'll have a good time!

8 days and counting
Ron

so... understanding that if i get caught, i could geta ticket for not having a plate, how many of us actually have a plate and are going on the ride? how much of the ride is on public road?

With in about 1 1/2 mi. from Slickrock Campground we will make a left on to a small two lane paved road about 14 miles to Potash the bitumen ends there and the dirt begins. Not a big risk of seeing the Man there, plus we will be bunched together so we can mix un-plated guys in with plated once we hit the dirt then everybody will get more spaced out (groovy huh?) once on dirt we got about 100 mi before we hit pavement again figure we will wait for everyone there, get bunched up again two lane road exiting the park. The worst is probably from where the road out of the park hits the main highway, good part is there is a GAS station right there we can all fuel up get tight together and head back to camp. I never had a plate on my 82 IT and ran alot more highway than this & never got a ticket. I think if we are obeying the traffic laws otherwise no one will even check us.

Ron

Well I'm plated but if the man shows up do the plated boys keep on going? Or should we hang out waiting for the police to see if they can find something wrong with our bikes Me, I keep trucking.

I don't think Johnnie Law in Moab,UT wants to take the time to go thru 20 plus bikes and be writing tickets for 4 or 5 hours (they would miss out on the fresh doughnuts) I think they might say go back to camp and get your trailers

Ron

Not to change the subject, but should I put my P.O.S. kickstand back on? I don't care to ride with it on, but there does not appear to be a lot of parking options out there, thanks for your input, please continue with the regularly scheduled post.
