resuable oil filter - any experience?

I have a bad experiance with stainless steel filters.
Paper filters are not as expensive to save money on them.

Can you elaborate? What was the bad experience?

I herd from a couple of people if you clean them very good with some special stuff, its okay

use them if you want, they are a crap idea IMHO

1; the holes between the mesh are 35 - 40 microns (the gap between the coated elko piston and the cylinder in total is 40 micron so 20 microns each side)

2; our "bypass" valve just returns oil to the gearbox so it is impossible for our engine to receive unfiltered oil (as they claim happens on cold start up)

Ive cut open new KTM paper filters and looked at them closely, the biggest hole I found was about 10 microns .. and only 1.

the tests they do sound impressive about absolute ratings etc and in general the comparison between some paper filters and mesh filters will be correct

but in our specific applciation the mesh filters do ABSOLUTELY have a lot of very big holes while the ktm paper filters don't have any.. not a single one bigger than 40 microns and that is only very occasionally found in the KTM long filters I use.

with all that though the main source of debris comes in through the air filter and some of that goes past the rings into the oil.

so as I have pointed out a few times the overall discussion is similar to deciding which hurts more: a hammer or an axe

I have used those very same stainless filters the past 8yrs on different bikes and the reason I went to the stainless filters is because of the papers ones coming apart even after soaking them in oil prior to installing them and not just once but 4-5 times with the KTM and K&N so I figured I'll at least get a filter that won't come apart and leak debris sure they may not be as fine micron wise but flow much better pressure and as mentioned above most of the stuff comes through the air filter and I change my oil every 500-600 miles at the most and never had an issue with a engine or transmission and ride them hard all the time and I trust Taffmeister in selling good products.

I've been using the stainless filters on my last 4 bikes and many miles and hours on them. I haven't had any problems with them. I guess it's preference.
