Rechargeable Li-ion Batteries

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen more discussion on Li-ion batteries. Joe Turner at http://www.turntechbattery.com produces and sells a line of motorcycle compatible Li batteries in various sizes. Advantages of Li batteries over standard lead/acid batteries include: much lighter weight; hold charge longer; very durable & long-lasting, plus they are fully compatible with the bike's charging system.

I have been using one of Joe T's 5Ah Li batteries in my '08 KTM (HTR 350) 250 XCF-W for 1,300 miles (57 hrs). Other than the initial charge, the battery has never seen nor required a Battery Tender and has never failed to E-start the engine even after the OEM fan has been running. Other than the fact that I like to experiment, plus of course the noted advantages, the main reason I went with the Li battery is that the stock 4Ah battery occasionally failed to E-start the high compression HTR 350 engine at inopportune times. Also, at 130$, the 1.6lb 5Ah Li battery was not all that much more expensive than the only other suitable replacement, i.e. the much heavier YTZ7S.

It's look interesting, and the weight reduction might worth the 190$, but somehow, with a non kick bike, and now no any-other-way-then-starter bike (REKLUSE), I'm a bit afraid of home made batteries...

All the more reason to go with the more dependable, longer lasting TurnTech Li-ion battery, especially the 7.5Ah version for the non kick, auto clutch bikes.

Note that GYBe uses 'Amps at 10 sec continuous' rather than 'CCA' according to their advertising.

Can anyone venture a guess as to approximately how many hours a 5ah battery like this would power a 25 to 35 watt headlamp?

Watt=Volt x Amp
Amp (of 25W bulb) = Watt/Volt = 25/12 = 2.08 Amp.
Amp (of 35W bulb) = 35/12 = 2.92 Amp

If the battery gives 5 Ah then with the 25W bulb it will hold 2.4 hours and with the 35W bulb it will hold 1.7 hours.

Thanks Mex!

I am thinking of a way to add a headlamp to my sons YZ125 as no one makes a kit or lighting coil for this model.

With these batteries it would add very little weight to have a headlight available when you get caught out after dark on your way back to camp.

Trailtech have small 6.6 Amp/h batteries. Buy the dual flood HID kit from them with this battery and you will have super compact, very strong lights that will hold almost 4 hours and can be installed either on the helmet or on the handlebar.

Installed 5 amp Turn-Tech in my 570. Went on 75 mile family type ride (lots of stopping) Started every time including out of the truck in windy jacket type weather. Measurably lighter, and is working good.

I just ordered a 5Ah from Joe at www.turntechbattery.com I guess I'll be the Husaberg test platform!

The TurnTech 5Ah battery is of course much smaller than the stock battery. I mounted the smaller Li battery in the stock battery box by first encasing the battery in in a 4" section of tubing cut from an old large 18" inner tube, followed by several layers of duct tape to make the new battery large enough to be held in place in the battery box with the stock rubber strap. Since I felt that the TurnTech battery might perhaps be more susceptible to physical damage than the stock battery, the extra 'padding' should provide extra insulation and protection.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Rechargeable Li-ion Batterie

I'm thinking of cutting a styrofoam block out the same size as the stock battery then cutting a slot into the styrofoam to fit the TurnTech battery.

I tried to use a styrofoam block at first but since the length of the Li battery was so close to the stock battery the thickness of the styrofoam ended up being too thin and flimsy to provide much support or cushion in the stock KTM battery box.

Perhaps coat the battery box and battery with grease or equivalent and use some expanding foam.
