Questions on my FE390

So I just picked up an 11 FE390. Seemed like a bought it from a good guy, very cool to talked to, had a quite a few nice bikes, and while he didnt keep everything spotless like I try too, he seemed to have kept up on all the service work.

Well it was around 20 degrees when i got there, bike would turn over but not start. We put it on a jumper and it took a while, but she did fire over. And when warm, she fires right up.

I get home, put the battery on my battery tender, and she would not fire at all, turn over, but not fire. Totally drained the battery trying to get it started. Put it on a jumper and a few more tries and she fired up. Again, fired right up after it warm.

So I have it on the battery tender, and walk into the garage an hour later to find the headlight, tail light, and FI light along with fuel pump firing for a second or two, then shutting off.

I pull it off the battery tender, and it stops doing that.

What might make it so hard to start? Could it just be the cold? It doesnt sound like the valves or anything are tapping, and it runs smooth and fires right up when warm.

Also, it is a harsh shift into first...sometimes it stalls just on the shift into first, i know some bikes just have sticky clutches on initial startup, is that normal on these bergs?

I only heard of 09's doing that with a battery tender? On the clutch adjust with as little play as you feel comfortable with that should help.

Cool, thanks! i just found out i have to pull the the negative terminal from the battery while charging, I hope that fixes it. I will play with the clutch tomorrow and see if i can get it going good.

The bike runs really good, and the power delivery is pretty darn amazing on my quick runs with it.

The 390 oem map is a bit strange. You need to apply very little throttle when you start (next to nothing). If you apply to much you will not get any fuel.

You could check the TPS position too (search this site), if it's a bit off so will the fuel be.

I'd say yes it's normal. I've tried a handful new 70-degree bikes and they've all been "clunky" when cold and shifting to first. Mine stalls if it's cold and at idle and I shift to first. However this and clutch drag disappears when the engine is warm.

What oil do you guys recommend for the 390? Brand and weight? I see the manual calls for 10w-50, but i hear a lot of people running different weights. The PO ran BelRay Thumper semi-synthetic 20-50.

Can I run a 15w-50 or 15w-40?

I just found out there is a "choke" on my 2010 FE390, left side, black knob tucked up under tank! Surprised as it is fuel injected, it just needs to be pulled when its cold out and only for a 5-10 seconds and then I close it.

Not really a choke, it is actually a "high idle" plunger. An easier thing to do, in regards to charging, is to pull the white connector that is plugged into the starter solenoid.

Yes fast idle/cold start and not really a choke hence the "choke" in my original post, also as many may know and for the ones or one that doesn't...it is also the idle adjustment if you turn it.

at the risk of sounding stupid here but I cant get starter connector loose? To the point where I feel like I'm going to break it. Is there a trick to getting this off. I can see what is supposed to occur but cant imagine it needs the amount of force I'm having to apply?

The starter connection at the starter or the relay? It may have some corrosion on the bolt or something to that effect. I'd spray some wd40 or something similar on it. After the nut comes off, i'd put some dielectric grease on the terminal stud.

I've had the same issue on my 390 when on a battery charger, but only a couple of times. I usually keep it on a tender. Any one have any idea why this is intermittent.

When I had a Shorai Battery on the bike tender charger. I had intermittent problem. But with a led acid battery no problem???
