for no other reason than i want to see if i can do it, i like to fiddle and it'll be fun i have embarked upon project bargain basement.

the aim; to get a set of road legal supermoto wheels for £150 max, preferable closer to £100.

so far i got a rear wheel in very good condition with usable disc and sprocket for £20.

after a bit of a fight getting the disc off which involved a hammer, blow torch, oil and a hex key with a 12" extension on it i got the wheel fitted to sort out the spacing. its goin to be tight on the hub, talking about 1 mm between the hub and the swingarm on the drive side, but the chain line will be spot on.

on the disc side i'm goin to have to mill about 4-5mm from the disc carriers to align with the caliper.

here's a vid to show the wheel fitted. spins freely, though this is without spacers.



to top it off despite the fight getting the disc off all the bolts are fine and reusable.

next i've got to get the spacers done and the carrier machined.
Options for the spacers is have them made complete or get some oem ones and get them machined down, this is what i'm opting to do, though i am making some enqs about some rsvr mille spacers, which to the eye look as if they might fit direct.

Just a friendly reminder...Don't forget to make sure the rear tire is centered on the bike so it is directly in line with the front tire, or you'll end up with a dangerous headshake.

just been out to shed to recheck.

its pretty central, were talking less than 5mm, to the left of where the center of the enduro wheel sits.

know of a couple of bikes running this set-up with no problem.

think the hardest thing is going to be sourcing road legal tyres within stated budget.
can see a trip to the local road bikes tyre bay for seconds coming on as everyone i know with a road bike, well the tyres aint good for anything by the time they're finished.
 
well after sending a load of emails and ringing around i couldnt find a gold front wheel anywhere, so yesterday i got a black one, arrived today unfortuantly whilst is mechanically sound the paint work leaves alot to be desired.

and blow me if there isnt a gold front for sale on ebay today. never mind, pay your money .......

moving on the rear is all measured up and marked up for machining. not going to rush the person doing it too much as its being done for free so i cant really complain.

time to sort out the front. the 3 things to do are;
1. spacers - easy peasy
2. spindle, not so easy making a hub for a 20mm fit a 26mm axle - though i have some ideas.
3. fit the standard berg disc - want to do this as it will make swapping wheels even simpler, rather than having to also fit a caliper bracket and i wont really need the big disc to start with.

the two ideas i have for fitting the disc is either getting a disc carrier made up that will allow me to bolt on a standard disc or get a whole disc made up.

going to be more emails and phone calls this afternoon me thinks.
 
has anyone on here got a duke 2?

they use a disc adaptor to mount the front 320 mm disc to the road wheels.

just need to find out if the disc adaptor would allow me to use my standard disc on the wheels i'm putting together.
 
well I got an answer to the duke 2 question and its a no go.

mocked up the front wheel last night and it showed up a couple of issues.

1. running the 260 disc is going to cause more hassle than its worth because the 320 mm apriia disc is dished it automatically sites the front wheel centrally. running a standard disc which is flat pulls the wheel to the left and would need the disc to be spaced out to get the wheel central. so I’ve decided to run the 320 disc and an adaptor. - lets hope I can find some free tyres other wise the budget is going to be bust :(

2. saw the ktm axle reduction kit. its exactly what I was planning and having weighed up the price and hassle of getting a set made its going to be about the same as just buying the ktm kit so that’s what I’m going to do.

so I’m just waiting on the rear wheel being machined and the spacers cut.

In regards to the rear wheel everyone is saying take 3mm off but I clamped a bit of metal between the pads the scored the posts and the measurement to take off comes to 5mm.

If I then measure from the scored line, across the hub to the sprocket it matches the dimensions of the off road hub.

Therefore I know the chain line is good, the wheel is 99.9% central therefore if the disc is the same distance across its going to line up.

The 2mm discrepancy may be because the others I’ve spoken with have done this on ktms.

Anyway to be safe I’m going to take 3mm of the posts to start with as it’s a damn sight easier to take a little more off than put it back on.

just ordered the axle and reduction kit.

cost of the brand new axle and nut the same as what second had ones are going for on ebay!

so i've spent.

rear wheel, disc and sprocket £20
oem rear wheel spacers £5
front wheel £40
axle reduction kit and axle £40

total £105

perhaps i was being optimistic hoping to do it for £100. £45 left to play with to stay on budget.
 
The second one we did - the mate's KTM525 with GSX600 (Ithink) wheels on it in the pic below - cost us Oz $210 total. The wheels came from a bloke at a swap meet who had managed to back his tractor fair over the top of his nice near new bike. He was parting it out in utter disgust!

The Gas Gas was about $400 by the time we finished it. We got those GSF600 wheels off US eBay.

My berg was the first. In hindsight it cost more than it should have, but at the time I had no idea what I was doing.

They are incredible fun on tight roads! - quicker than the road bikes.

Hey Cypher, sorry man I've been slack ( & really busy ). Measured up the rear tonight & will post the measurements tomorrow for the front. Heaps of photo's as I've measured so will post the lot tomorrow morning when I can see straight. Had an attack of the Taffy's & am not seeing real good right now:lol:
 
Here's a photo of the rear spacer. It's only 2mm from the outer race to the swingarm but the cush drive hub hasn't been machined where the sprocket mounts. I'd consider machining the hub where the bearing sits & using a thinner bearing to give more space between the swingarm & hub. There's a bearing inside the wheel hub so the cush drive bearing doesn't need to be as big in my oppinion


There is also a bush between the cush drive & the wheel hub as pictured. I'd just get these machined. Measurements are as follows, 20mm id, 32mm od & 25mm bearing id. Both inside & outside depths are 6mm.

Brake side spacer is 6mm offset from hub & 9mminside bearing.

mmmm. interesting.

whilst our wheels look the same pattern they are different or the person who made them up changed the sproket carrier / cush drive plate

will get up a photo of mine up, but to me it looks like they machined back that side as all the aprilia wheels i've seen have had a 7mm thick seal infront of the bearing, help within the hub

Ah ha ! riddle solved! having just ploughed through some parts manuals your wheel is from a 1998 - 2004 250 whilst mine is from a 2000 and some thing 125.

looking at the manuel that spacer might even be the original equipment one.

if id known you wheel looks slightly easier to fit than the 125 whch compared to yours seems over built.

on the 125 wheel the sprocket mounts to the cush plate the the plate goes over a steel housing which is bolted to the wheel and in which the bearing sits and is the held in place by a washer and giant circlip.

where as yours is just held in place by the swing arm clamping on the spacer and holding it all together?

We do indeed live & learn my friend. I noticed that your rear rim was completely different from mine but thought that the hub dimensions might be the same.

I've posted some photo's of the front & will vernier them up tomorow when I get back from my monthly ride of the FE550. :roll: Haven't had the hubs apart on the front yet so dont know what those allen screws go into yet. Sweet having the MASSIVE front disc. All I have to do now is learn how to do stoppies to put in to good use. Downloaded a couple of youtube vids to teach me how so it cant take long to get the action happening.

I tend to put mine in my photobucket account then link across.

to start go into 'post reply' rather than use 'quick reply' as this is where the option tags are.

To get them out of the UHE gallery click on the photo so it opens up big.

Right click and select 'properties'

and it is this address which goes between the tags

And yes, the beady eyed amongst you may have spotted that the rear is not actually the same wheel i started the project with, even though it is hard to tell :wink:

i came upon a set of wheels and tyres complete and it was too good to miss, so got those.

so from doing one set of wheels i'm now doing two. Also the paint work on the gold 5 spoke wheel was so good it would have pained me to spray it black, so I'm doing a set of 3 spoke in black and a set of 5 spoke in gold.

useless fact time;

1. the gold is 'brembo' gold which is neigh on impossible to get. An almost identical colour is Honda inca pearl, so that's what the 5 spoke front will become.

2. the gold 5 spoke aprilia wheel cost more than twice as much as standard black wheels when new!

3. ill flog one set of wheels to recoup the cost of the project.
 
I don't know why but cast wheels look real sexy on a supermoto.................... looking good Cypher (the wheels not you!)
 
It's looking really good cypher, very impressive, makes my spokes look rather dated.
 
have just done the first swap from sm wheels to off road wheels and only took 20 mins, most of which was trying to find the spanners id just set down after the shed faries had moved them, so am happy with that.

anyway off for an early morning trip tomorrow to catch the sunrise. would have left the sm wheels on but am just waiting on the front tyre.

also had a bonus today in that i found a tidy little machine shop who seem only too happy to have you in there asking if they can do stuff, unlike some, and they all seem to ride bikes or drive modded landrovers.

The Landrover parked outfront being similar to some of the rock crawlers i've seen in the states.

if only id known it had existed previously.
 
Those 3 spokers look well sweeter that the original wheels you had. Thanks for the info on putting the pics in the threads too. Cant wait to see your finished project.
