Can one of you people with an 04 550 or 650 please tell me what it says on the end of your starter motor, ie Brand and the number eg, Mitsuba ms-14? I'm just curious,Thanks,
Scully

Hi Scully:

Just picked up an 04 starter and bracket for my 01 470fx.

It says: Mitsuba and below that F.N.E. off to the side SM-14. Husaberg Part # 82040001000. Made in Italy.

The bracket is part #82040002000. Made in Austria.

I'll take some pics and post them here tonight. I hope this will do the trick!

Also when I was at Ron Bishops he had a 450 & 650 on the floor. He compared the starter bracket recieved to both bikes and confirmed a difference between the 450 and 650.

s/motor

Thanks Husabut, is your s/motor off an 04 450 or the 550/650? They are different, with the 550/650 being a larger capacity unit.
The one I run in my Berg is from a CBR 600 and it is still a Mitsuba SM-14 but is gutless, and that is why I start on 24 volts to turn it over fast enough and then it reverts back to 12 volts. I made my own bracket and used the rear end mounting bit from my old starter.
See if you can find out some more?

The starter is for the 04 550/650. I am aware that the 04 450 starter is different than the 550/650 one.

S/motor

Thanks Husabut for the great responce!
The s/motor looks exactlly the same as mine, but obviously isnt?
Good luck with it. What happened to your old one?

It never worked. The 01 e-start system seems to be the most problematic.
No matter what it would never turn over. I added a YTZ7S battery which would spin it a little but not start it.

Due to yours and others posts about the 04 starter benefits I have decided to give it a whirl again. I also now know about the special charging requirements of the YTZ7S battery and also just purchased an Opti-Mate charger. If this doesn't help I will then work on the auto decompression and get this thing to e-start.

Yeah my decomp mech is the new one with the weld on the cam face and I still dont think it gives enough lift. It was barely making 30 tho when I fitted it new? My sprag clutch "thingy majiggy" still free spins when cold and even sometimes when hot? I have changed the oil from full synthetic to syn blend (as recommended) with a slightlt better result, so I can only assume it has something to do with the decomp mech and the fact that with 24 volts at START only the motor turns over way to fast and causes huge load on it? F**k knows?
Let us know how you get on. How much was it?

battery

I take it you read the charging specs on the side of the battery?
My charger gives out 2 amps, so I give mine between 2 to 2.5 hours depending on what the multi metre says.

?

What is that is Aust dollars ??? sorry
sounds cheap to me if it the 550 model and it fixes all your woes!

I pulled the old starter today. Here is a shot of the difference between an 01 and 04 550/650 starter.

They are identical on the outside except the 04 is a little longer.
Here is the original starter and bracket.

This shot is of the new starter fitted in place with the new bracket set but not bolted in. The bracket does not line up with the starter. It requires a little offset. This must be the 450 bracket?

Here is a top down shot without the bracket. Definately sticks out farther than the stocker.

It looks like I could just drill holes in the starter to line up with the bracket and call it good. I am going to try and get the correct bracket (if available) . My local dealer has a 450 and 650 in stock. Now that I know what I am looking for it should be easy to tell what the solution may be.

husabutt, that has got to be the cleanest bike I have ever seen especially for an 01! Even the nickel plating on the screws look like new.

What do you use to clean it?

Thanks Twistie. Most everyone else calls you Twistie so what the hay.

I just use Simple Green and an assortment of brushes. Mostly a tooth brush.Usually I only ride in good weather (not much rain here anyway) and keep it in the garage. I clean just about everything with Simple Green. I might just like the stuff a little too much. A squirt bottle full, a toothbrush and I'm off.

Hi all:
Went to my favorite local dealer today (Ron Bishops) and checked out the 450 and 650 starter brackets. My suspicions were correct. The starter is for the 550/650 but the bracket is for the 450. It was ordered correctly but something was lost in the translation. Oh well. Reorderred the bracket along with a 04 negative battery cable, battery box and starter relay bracket. It is noteable that the ground wire is now attached to the starter bracket (see photo) whereas the 01 cable bolts to the chain roller.

Husabut, are you sure you ride your Berg???? I thought I looked after my bike? I can assure you that I have never had a tooth brush near mine!
Good pics tho, now everyone can see what we have been talking about with these s/motors, well done and good onya.

Thanks Scully,

As soon as I get the additional parts and install them I will post the results.

I was poking around on KTM World's website and got an even better idea!
Why stop with a measly 650 starter. It looks like a KTM 950 Adventure starter will bolt right up with a few minor modifications. Now we are talking Kilowatts of cranking power to spare. Are you with me Scully.
The others just don't understand but its O.K. When they come to take us away we will have the last laugh. I know that you understand and that its not us who are crazy its them.

s.motor

Husabutt, you are mildy amusing for a Yank. People allready think I'm strange having 2 batteries and starting with 24 volts, using an inline water tap for a hot start etc etc, but if it works!!
And by the way, I actually work in a Syke ward?????????? So look out.
I am exploring (at the moment) the possibility of getting my s/motor rewired to "go-faster"?

Well...............................

Its been over a month now and I don't have my parts yet! @%&*!

I really would like to see if the 04 starter will do the trick. And desert season will be here in a couple of weeks. Its been a long 4 months. Our riding season here is the opposite of most. We ride in the winter and park it (rebuild) in the summer.

I will keep you "posted"
