One spark plug per ride...?

Ok, it seems that I cannot start the bike well (or at all) unless I put a brand new spark plug, and then it starts.

I inspected the last spark plug, it was greyish. Used wire bruse to clean up, put it back, still did not work.

Put a brand new plug and braaam starts in one kick.

And this with both Champions and NGKs.

What could be the reason? Bad carburetion?

I won another FCR 39 on eBay and this one seems to be the right one (comes from a 2003 450 EXC), so I guess I'll say bye bye to the Dellorto.

From what I know about this bike's history, it's likely the carb is faulty.

Oops, did I attack Bob again?

you get that carb set up as per the owners doc and you'll be fine fella!

try to get it running right with the new carb then have a go at the dell orto. do it in that order fella please.

my bike improved when i found out that TDC was out by about 8d on the flywheel. one change at a time.

If plug is really gray and not actually black wet fouled, sorry to say that the ignition is likely weak. All too many ignition problems get blamed on the carb.

I used to have the same problem when I used C8E plugs. Then after quite a while, thanks to Dale I tried CR8EK no more problems. That worked on my bike a 96 FE 501 but your bike is newer and the above would not work on your bike. I think it is a similar problem that could be solved in like fashion. Hope this gives you a idea.

Hard to say without some electric testing, but a lot of members have stator problems and it is usually the charge coils on the ignition side of the stator.

Your ignition is weak if it goes with a new plug- what about trying a small plug gap maybe 10 thou to prove a problem- dont wire brush a plug to clean it even a proper plug cleaner will harm a plug you may get it working again in another motor otherwise chuck it

Never done that either... Sorry still learning here. How do I reduce the gap? What do you mean by 10?

Forgive the noob

NZ means .25mm using a feeler guage. to do it you gently tap the end of the plug on the kitchen table and it will close the gap a little.

the other way i do it is to put the feeler guage in the gap then tap the plug on the kitchen table.

you need more voltage to jump a bigger gap so it makes sense to drop the gap if you think the ignition is struggling.

that should do you nick!

I see... .25 = 1/10 of an inch... Thanks :)

 Uh, maybe in France but nowhere else in this world.

The auto parts store sells a nice little plug gap tool for about $1.00 or you can pound on it like Taffy although I wouldn't. Stock gap is .025" (25 thousandths of an inch). You could try .023 or .021.

Taffy said .25mm...

Sorry, too much time spent talking to computers, giving them names, etc...

1mm is .040" (forty thou)
.25mm (a quarter of a millimetre) is .010" (ten thou)

this is what NZ was advocating.

sorry i was being a cheapskate again and advocating damaging the wife's kitchen!!!

I will bang it halfway to the rod, it does not have to be scientific.

If there is not enough conductivity when there is a bit of carbon deposit on the tip of the plug (pardon my lack of proper language) but it works when the plug is spanking new, then all it needs is to be a tad closer to the rod and we'll see.

It may be a fix, that and the Keihin FCR 39 that's in the mail and this time it should fit.
