oil plug covered in mud???

Hello all,

I changed the oil today before going out for a ride, the oil plug (magnet) was covered with something like mud, from what i could tell from my experience, this was mos2 grease (molybdenum disulfide (or in plain english moly :p )), is this a normal finding in a berg ? Do they run with moly-rich oils (strange thing for a bike, since these tend to cause clutch slippage) or maybe there's an old berg school trick of mixing two teaspoons of mos2 with the oil (right before serving it with cookies) ????????????????

Have you ever seen or heard anything like this before ????

Because i bought a used bike, i'm a bit suspicious.... If it was a jap bike, mos2 grease would mean that the engine was disassembled, and probably had some major surgery eg conrod/crank bearings replacement etc.. (usually because something nasty happened).......

Thanks for any info you might share :)

that sludge on the magnet has to be metal in a grain form from something?

regards

Taffy

did the oil itself resemble a chocolate milkshake? (water in the oil?)

Hi all, thanks for replying!! :)

Taffy : metal grain ??? :? :? :? :? from what ? and how ???? (heart attack imminent) i don't think anything in there can produce that fine metallic powder, plus i don't think that thing was attracted by the magnet, probably was there because it was the lowest part of the oil pan ?...
Ned37 : the oil had a few gray spots, but i don't think it was coolant (didn't smell like it, and wasn't brownish / baileys like..) also i haven't noticed coolant dripping from the weep hole, so i guess the other option would be a blown head gasket and i haven't observed anything like that....

the thing was like the black goo in this pic :

no big metal flakes or anything like it (a few shiny steel 1mm particles, which i think is normal (at least for a gsxr or similar), probably originating from steel bearings ? aluminum isn't magnetically attracted..), but an excessive amount of this black goo thing (not like in the picture above, the whole plug was covered in it, quantity was about a full teaspoon)

i'm used to clean plugs like : http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k32/N ... 26smfs.jpg or http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s213 ... 2636e6.jpg , (without the metal strands :p), a bit of oil, some metal particles and that's it......

I'm thinking either it had a major rebuild, or maybe this stuff is clutch material (highly unlikely to my opinion..) ??.... I can't find any other explanation.........

I'll change the oil again after 4-5 hrs, so this time i'll be carrying my cell phone and maybe post pics if the black goo is back  i'm thinking about using torco this time.. Something with a lot of additives ...........

thanks for bothering :D (this is where the beer emoticon would be, but i couldn't find it, if it doesn't exist this would be the first motorcycle site without one!!!!)

that black sludge can come from bearing grease maybe? there are a few internal bearings that can be installed with the seals on

Im still getting a similar sludge 20 hrs after a rebuild. my camshaft bearings are sealed. there are fine metal particles in it but thats not the sludge itself.

the other bits look like gearbox dogs. while this one " Berg650026smfs.jpg" looks like mains failure

I use delo400, it might have some sludge in it.

i get similar sludge, have had it on both my bergs and the ktm 520 i had previously.

none of them went of have gone pop.

Sorry for the late reply, the last two weeks have been very difficult (work wise..)

Joe, the oil filter looked like a dirty air filter :p I don't know how helpful that description was... (btw that thing doesn't qualify as an oil filter to me!!)

I asked other husaberg/ktm owners and told me that this thing is normal, probably from the clutch or something ...

Thanks for answering guys :)
