New to me FE570

Jakee, sorry to hear this.

Good thing its covered by insurance.

Buy it back mate.

Thanks Alan. Unfortunately not covered by insurance. I'm working with the police to waive some storage fees. They've had it on investigative hold for 2.5 weeks now. I will get it back for sure at this point though. Just a matter of when. And then a matter of what's the damage? Looking forward to finally getting my eyes on it though.

yeah, if you get charged storage fees that's over $1000 in storage, plus the tow. I bet it's $60/day or more, at 18 days that's $1080 + a couple hundred bucks for the tow

my tow in SF 3 years ago was $265 for the tow and then $85/day for storage, so it adds up VERY quickly. the instant it's at the yard is a day of storage, too. if it'd been there 18 days I'd have had to pay $1795.

I take it you only had liability coverage?

Yup. $260 for towing. $100/day for storage. I finally got to have an actual conversation with an officer in charge and he's saying I'll be liable for towing and 2 days storage max. I hope to talk him into no days of storage. Ha. If he's waiving days why not waive them all? I'm not responsible for any of the events leading to the tow. And I'm responsible for paying for fixing the bike (or not, depending on the current condition). That's my argument at least. We'll see.
You're right about insurance. Only liability. Figured it was well locked and I only use it as a dirt bike mostly. I'll think twice about that next time.

was this in an apartment garage? they're notorious for theft. of course, you had it locked up too...

I've found that full coverage doesn't increase cost *too* much vs liability. Comprehensive (covers theft/vandalism) is dirt cheap to add to a bike like this.

I'm glad to hear that they won't be charging you for all the storage.

Yeah. Apartment garage. I’d heard some horror stories but that lock had worked for 10 years. And on the Berg I had a cover locked on to it as well. They just ripped it to shreds. That lock was probably easy to pop but they never wanted the DR I had.

I finally got the Berg back. The investigator waived all storage fees but one day so I paid towing, one storage day and a lien fee, which apparently the towing company gets to charge after a certain amount of time based on the fact that I might never come pick it up. Seems sort of scammy since I was obviously coming to get it but wasn't allowed to. Whatever. $430 is better than it could have been.

More importantly it looks ok-ish! It obviously took a hit to the front. The forks were twisted in the triples so the wheel was off center from the bars by about 25 degrees. We released the tension on the triples and it creaked it was so bound up. Twisted it back in shape fairly easily. I don't see anything bent except the bars. I'll take the wheel off and the forks out. Take the triples off maybe. Handlebars obviously. Gotta make sure the triples aren't bent or the steering tube damaged. Some electronics need replacing. Levers looked ok. It started. Not as easily as before though, but it sounded good. It sat for maybe 6 weeks. I'll clean it up and inspect it and see what it needs.

Any tips welcome!
Thanks all.

Theft/wreck update...

Hey all. Just got the report back from Super Plush on my front end. The forks are straight but the triples are bent. Both top and bottom.

Anyone have a set of triples for a 2009 FE570?!

Super Plush had a BRP bottom off a KTM I might try to use if I can't get a good set of Berg triples. I don't really want to spend too much on this fix as the bike has 13000 miles and I can't decide how long it's going to last. If I get lucky on a set of triples I'll be stoked to get it back on the trails though.

Thanks!!

All good news Jake. The buggers know how to screw you while your down!

Jake, the triples are the same on the KTMs. You should be able to pick up a set for $100-150. Get the 22mm offsets which the fitted to the ‘11’s and 12’s. They are reasonably common coming up on the selling forums often and dont get big dollars for them.

Thanks Alan. I ended up finding a guy to straighten mine. He checked the whole front end including the wheel and axle, confirmed everything looked good and straightened the triples, and only charged me $140. Now I'll just get bearings and start putting it back together.
While the thing's apart I'll check the valves and see what's happening there. Also clean up some leak that's super sticky but I can tell where it's coming from (somewhere above the engine. air filter oil?). Then I should be back in business.

Just did a valve adjustment on this thing and some other work while I have it apart. When I take the cam out the intake rocker won’t roll back all the way to get at the shims. I think it has to be hitting the inside (right side) cam bearing. The exhaust rocker hits the intake rocker but rolls back as it should when the intake rocker is out. So I had to just do the shims when the rockers were out. I can’t imagine anything will interfere with anything else when the cam is in and everything is only moving hundredths of millimeters so I’m fairly sure I’ll just start it up and see what happens but let me know if this is a bad idea.

Otherwise it’s coming along nicely. New rockers and shafts. Valves perfectly in spec (after many errors, math and otherwise). New injector and fuel filters. Wrapped my mid pipe and repacked my FMF canister. I hope to run it this weekend. The last time I rode it it was decel popping and missing. Just running crappy. I think the new fuel filters and new injector will make it right. Should run much cooler and start much easier with the valves in spec (if it doesn’t blow itself up). Looking forward to starting it up! Let me know if anyone has suggestions on the rocker issue.
