New style Auto Decompression Lever

Hello - I recently purchased the newer style auto decompression lever ('04 and later) for my '02 FE400. In comparision to the older style that I am replacing, it is about 2.5mm shorter in shaft length - so it doesn't fit as deep into the pocket in the cam lobe as the original. Has anyone else encountered this? Do you think I should use it or return it for the earlier style? The photos below show the older vs newer side by side and the newer style installed in the cam.

I have made the upgrade as well and so far so good except I can't tell you if it helps with e-start yet. Ady claims it does.

You'll need the new spring as well, or it will not recoil properly.
 
The longer lever ist for the alu sproket.
the first 02 models has yet the alu, the later models the steel sproket.
03 was definitely the steel one.

You have to change the sproket too.
 
I already have the steel sprocket. The decompression lever sits between the bearing and shoulder for the sprocket, so the sprocket itself won't affect the length of the lever. The width of the shoulder on the cam will though. I always thought that the cams were interchangable for pre and post '03. Doesn't anyone know if the cams are different for pre '03? Its looking like I had better not use this decompression lever.

You are right of course.

My 2001 501 have got a new camshaft (model 2003) too, not only the steel sprocket.
(and the better 2003 rocker arms with the modified rollers)
The 2003 camshaft has the shorter decomp. lever.
