get a 570 and leave the stock exhaust in place... put more oil on the air filter.. put on mild map and go.. you wont regret getting the bigger bike

The beauty of the 570 is that you get ALL the benefits! Dont be afraid of a little extra power, they only go as fast as you twist the throttle. I dont have the "magic switch" and I run the comp map all the time. I started on smaller bikes and found that I just kept upgrading. As your riding improves it is natural to look for more. If I had my time again I would go straight for the big dog and deal with it for awhile.

I went from an XR440 that I only had on the road for 3 months to my FE650. Went to the shop looking at 450's and after test riding a WR, CRF and EXC I rode home on the berg. Get the bigger bike. I do alot of road km's and it's nicer to chug along in 6th gear not reving the bike hard from a road perspective but off road if you don't want to use the power you can always go up a gear and ride the torque. If I'd brought one of the 450's I'd be kicking myself for not going bigger.

switching the mapping to mild got mentioned. just thinking there is also the G2 throttle tamer which makes the first half of the throttle very soft and easy to manage. perhaps this with the mild mapping would be enough to let dirt noobs get away with the bigger capacity then just grow into the bike?

it is a big issue, i know a guy who had the 570 and had some pretty spectacular offs with grabbing handfuls of throttle at the wrong time. i've been riding for decades and almost got into trouble a few times too with too much throttle in gnarly conditions. but not a prob since having the throttle cam.

A throttle tamer and mild mode on a 570 is the way to go, the G2 really calms the initial launch on my 570 and i recon that it's now less touchy than a standard 450. Don't make the mistake of fitting the domino ergo grips with palm rest like I did. When I first tried them went bouncing over trails, when standing my palm was twisting the throttle on every bump - scary stuff. Now I've rotated the throttle grip to a position where there's no point in having the ergo shape.

Well here I am. Pondered the 390 vs 450 question and asked a lot of people. Some of whom may have actually known what they were talking about.

Basically I'm 100kg, do trail riding with some technical stuff and some open fire trails. I believe that I would have enjoyed the 390, but occasionally would have liked a bit more power for e.g. heading up a long hill and using just a little more grunt to get over erosion banks, and lofting the front wheel across ruts, logs etc.

I've had bigger bikes in the past, and sometimes had to spend energy being cautious about all that power.

So I went for the 450. Time will tell. (you can enjoy a ride on a TTR250 and on a TE610, so what does it matter really!)
