Need help with picking a bike

Well I thought I had a Berg....03 Fe501e that was listed here which was local for me. However it sold before I could get to it. :(

I test rode it and I loved it. I still have a good chance at getting a 99 Fe501 for a very good price. Owner says it runs good, but does not have a great history. He has done all the maintanence on the bike, but does not know how it was maintained before him.

I loved the ride on the 03, loved the power, the balance of the bike was great. How different would the 99 model be. I know that the frame and suspension is completely different, is the ride that different? I am a big guy 6'4" 245, but the guy that owns it is bigger than me. So I don't really know how it is set up.

What are my suspension options....can I get race tech springs or WP springs or is there another company for fork springs? How about the rear shock, rebuild, replace, who what and where?

How about mundane parts for the 99 like brake pads, brake lines, ignition, etc....is that available from Husaberg?

Anyone know of any good deals out there on a used Husaberg???? I am on a budget, that is why I am so bummed about the local one. It was a great deal.

I am located in Flagstaff AZ.

I would consider a 610 as well. What other bikes should I consider....Huskies (510, 570,610???), KTMs???????

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Darrin,
I take it that it was Tomas's bike you tried to buy. If not there is another one in Flagstaff.
I have an 03 501 that may be for sale if I can contact the owner. I would say it is in roughly the same condition as Tomas's bike. I also have a 05 TE450 Husky for sale that is a really well equipped low hour bike.

As for your questions about parts. I would say that almost everthing is readily available for the 99 and up bikes.

Darrin,
welcome to husaberg.org. Last year I bought a 99fe400e. i absolutley love the bike. i do miss the sound of a 2 stroke but this bike has more usable power than i think I can use. I ride single track here in central/southern ohio. I was on a budget too, but found this bike on ebay, I got it for $500 but it was a frame with wheels and 3 boxes of motor and engine parts(pics are in my gallery). thanks to dez i got a tank and shrouds for it......a local mechanic here that is familiar with euro bike charged me $400 to put it all together. I have found alot of things i need are on ebay. not much there now, but ya need to check it everyday. if you have a husaberg/ktm dealer near you, he may be able to cross reference the part number to a ktm part. any problem i have had I have been able to solve through the help of the guys on this sight or alittle inguinuity on my part. I would like a new berg, but as you know when your on a budget, there are more important things you need to get first. but i wouldn't hesitate again to buy an older model berg. I am 6'3" 240 lbs and have never used all my suspension, and I will tell you the older models have a soft ride with the 50mm forks, I cannot speak for the newer suspensions.

Yes, it was Tomas's bike. I test rode it and I fell in love. I was just not quite quick enough. Seemed like a fair price and that is the top of my budget range. There is a 99 model in Vegas, but the owner does not know the history. I don't know enough about the Huskys but I am sure that you are going to want a fair price for your Husky which would be out of my price range. Let me know about the Husaberg. Thanks for the help.

Darrin, What is your price range ? There may be a 2000 FE501 E for sale soon in Montrose, CO one owner meticulously maintained. If interested PM me and I will give you the details. Do you know Sethro here at the UHE? He and his wife Elf live in Flagstaff too. If you get a Berg or a Husky he is a really good guy to know (he owns both) also he is well versed and good at suspension set up.

PM Sent.

As an aside, I tested a 00 Honda XR 650R today. It seems like a decent bike. But I have to say it did not make me giddy inside like the Berg did. I don't know if I should take that to heart. I mean the XR had really good power, and well it is a Honda so parts are like water. But I just can't get it out of my head, the Berg made me feel giddy, like a little kid. I think that says something for the bike. :D

I appreciate all the help, keep it comming.

Dude, I have a 2000 Fe 501 and I can SMOKE my friend's XR650R's I know exactly why you like the Berg!

I totally believe that, I am interested in several bikes, but I have only ridden the 2. I just wrote Sethro a pretty detailed message. I have talked with him over at Adv Rider site, though we have yet to meet.

Damn this is tough. DR leaves tomorrow and I don't have a bike. Well hopefully this will allow me to find close to exactly what I want.

....and neither one of you want to know what i think :x . i've been looking at that bike since the krusher, but needed to sell my fe400. well, because TAFFY needed a bike to ride at moab, i didn't press the sale. until last thursday when a guy calls me up and talks me me out of my fe400e. pm'd tomas and told him i'd take it. by the time he replied you were on your way from vegas. soooo, i've still got the kickstart 98 fe400 that even TAFFY couldn't kill. i want $1800 for it. seth has seen the bike and his buddy was interested in it, and i'll bet it would haul 6'4" around. 8)
anybody got an 04 or 05 for sale now that i will soon be out of bergs?

the 400 was very strong. the early models had the '53' cam i think and it makes a big difference. however, pulling 245 around? mmmm? i'll stay out of this but thanks again for two great days of rding that 400.

one up on the rebound and two down on the compression, one tooth off the rear - get it right sir! you know how i like my bikes :)

Hello Darrin: Thanks, I wish you well in finding the perfect bike, and I am confident you will end up finding the best bike to meet your needs !!

I don't know where "local" is for you, but check the classifieds here. There is a really nice 2000 FE501E in Colorado. I am familiar with the bike, it's really nice!

Well I guess persistance pays....I finally talked with the guy, sounds like a nice bike and I am going to try and get down to Phoenix this weekend to take a look at the bike. Sounds like it was pretty well taken care of so we will see.

Still hunting, and the DR left last night. I don't have a bike right now.....feels cold and lonely......the walls are already starting to close in on me

Darrin, That is great to hear, I figured since you are a pretty big guy, that 610cc motor might be beneficial. I am only 160 lbs. so no need for 600 + cc's to carry me around. :)
