Hi,i finally have mastered the kickstart technique on starting and got it running today,i realise now that you should never buy a bike as a non runner?
It smokes,, alot,, and it is very oily from the front exhaust manifold?..thought by giving it an oil change may of cleared it as it has been sat for 2yrs from the previous owner.but alas i done the oil change but it still smokes?..
Do you think this could be the rings as it looks a very expensive fix?
and i would rather not spend alot of money on her and just sell it as seen?.. :cuss:

It can be OK if 650s smoke I think - a question of small fixes and setup - there might be too much oil or it needs a breather reroute etc.

... How much oil did you put in?

only put in about 850ml,just seen on sight glass..it was smoking before the change but i can see oil from the exhaust manifold?..

That's probably not the best sign :) but still when the forum kicks in - probably soon, there is a lot of expertise here - I have hope that it could still be a reasonably worthwhile solution. I mean, it does run ...

very oily from the front exhaust manifold
prolly a leaky valve cover or torn breather tube dribbling oil over the front.
first before getting all excited about problems you think you see, take some time to do the proper top end maintenance as described in the doc on the home page. valve settings, timing, cam chain, general condition of components, etc.
get it running right and you won't have time to notice if it's smoking.

How long have you have it running? I had a similar problem when i bought mine. It had sat idle for a time meaning all the carby gaskets and seat had perished allowing fuel to drain into the cylinder. I actually emptied over a litre and a half of liquid from the sump, a lot of it being fuel. Anyway, this caused the rings to unseat from the cylinder and in turn caused heavy smoking. A decent ride with good acceleration and load fixed the problem without reoccurence. Probably not a bad first port of call i'd reckon.

Remove the air filter and check for oil in the air box (frame). If the bike had been layed or tipped over at any time oil can run into the air box through the breather and cause this problem. Make sure the foam filter is still installed in the breather hose.
If there is a piece of debris stuck in the crank case reed valve this can cause it to smoke as well. You will need to remove the clutch cover to inspect this.
Anything other than those 2 items will probably result in spending a some time and $$.

try going to a bit heavier grade oil, I had a similar problem with my 650 when I first got it. the heavier oil tends to not splash/get sucked up into the air box/frame like the lighter stuff did and was able to run a litre in it as well. if u got the manual it should have a few pointers as to what grade oil for what type of climate you ride in

Mine developed oil from the exhaust manifold, but wasnt smoking badly, just a bit.

Turned out to be piston rings.

If someone has had it down they have either bodged or they have failed to make the oil rings sit correctly.

if you ever have the head off and see a domed piston in there let me know...... I know what's wrong...

regards

Taffy
