Motor stopped running

I have an '02 FE 400E. I started it up this morning and let it warm up so I could change the oil and as it was idling it stopped running suddenly. It is almost like the engine is froze up, you cannot move the kick starter nor will the electric start do anything.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How long was it running before it stopped? Any unusual noises? Any metal in the oil? How many hours on the bike?

Let us know,

I would make sure it is not in gear, remove the spark plug and try to turn the engine over by hand using the kick starter.

If it won't turn, you will have to open it up!

It could be lots of things!

But you are lucky, it happened while idling and any physical damage will be minimized.

Regards,

Joe

It was running for about a minute, it didn't make much of a noise just a very sudden stop, I haven't drained the oil yet and the bike has about 50 hours on it.

Thanks

Jeff

something has dislodged inside by the sound of it and locked the engine.

if you remove the left clutch cover you can pull the clutch basket off and see if it's at the crank or in the gearbox. 100% of the failure can be found by what you diagnose in that cover.

go see and cross ya fingers!

Update: I took the valve cover off and found that one of the locking nuts off of the rear intake valve had came loose and wedged between the cam sprocket and chain and therefore cracking the valve cover.

I was able to safely remove the nut but I noticed that the cam chain tensioner has a slight angle to it. I'm not sure if it should be like that or not? Any help would be appreciated.

Jeff

Jeff,

Have you removed the tensioner?

Is the rack bent?

Can you take and post a picture?

Yet another tragedy that could have prevented by using the magnetic camshaft :D I wiish mine would have been idling............

This may or may not be relevant to this thread. A few months ago we had a 03 engine in the shop and the tech was having difficulty adjusting one valve. The problem was that when the correct spec was found on the feeler gauge the spec was lost as the lock nut was snugged up.After repeated tries we decided to take a look at the tappet adj screw.Upon inspection it was found that that sometime in its life someone had overtighted the screw and stretched the thread.Actually three out of the four tapped screws were damaged.
I do believe that if we had not investigated this abnormal feeling when tightening the nut it could have caused a problem as this thread describes,as the nut could not possibly stay seated.

I have repaired the valve cover and put a new nut on, I'm putting everything back together and should know tomorrow if it works. All of your help and suggestions have been very helpful.

Keep your fingers crossed......

Jeff
