Hi Leotech,
I can understand that you see it that way (1400 - 10 making it) about Erzberg but I can't explain it. for me its the feeling of being part of it & trying it. The circus around it, the prologue. there are lots of carnavalesq riders in the prologue. They only subsrcibe to the prologue.
I did it in 2009, made it into the race and only came to the 5th check point but I had the time of my life.
got a starting number for 2010 & 2011 but funds (well, lack of) made me bail out last minute.
The thing with Erzberg is the mix of the party & prologue and the real race. Many can go fast on a wide gravel road but never climbed a steep hill before. But that's great for the spectators
Erzberg is pretty uniq between the rest of the races in the competition (yes, there's an official serie of races now)
But I do understand your point of only 10 (actually, in averge its 20 but that is just accademic) of 500 make it in general.
But than again, these things shouldn't be a walk-in-the-park.
For me personally I have no other goal than to enjoy. I am not going for number one (hell, Im 55!)
We don't have a proper MX track nearby but I would enjoy to learn to jump. I also enjoy watching the EWC. Actually, I am organizing a visit to the Portuguese round 4 in May. The Monday after the race we're gonna ride the enire track and specials. And then back home in two days: 400 km all off-road.
If I had the chance I would also like to try trail & improve my skills but again, no time/money.
instead I go out with some friends and do gnarly stuff (as our american friends say) on our Bergs/KTMs. And sometimes there are small local races with only 20-25 competitors. the good side of that is that I always come home with a price (3rd, 2nd or 1st Senior out of three  )
hope I could explain a little what I like about extreme enduro.
cheers,
Adrian
