Am I starting life long relationship with Husaberg? Will I be happy ever after or ?

I don't Try understanding Taffy if you try it will give you headache. Times he's very helpful then other times like now he's can be a #%^ it changes all the time. I'll get use to it.

The sad part is I do look like that!! Just a lot older. Be carful Husaberg's can be addictive. If your a little eccentric and a mechanic you'll love them. Good luck

Ya I might be a bit eccentric and I am mechanic. Wouldn't you know it, I like it a lot. How did you know? I am planning to have this one as a toy for the eccentric side of me and 525 exc for the rational side. I have just ordered shinco 244 knobbies for it. My next two projects will be external spin on oil filter under the seat and dual cooling fans - lighted blue led. Large rear sprocket also. Does anybody have heard good things about some oil stabilizer /additives? I think I will do 70% dirt, about. What is upper rpm safe limit for this 550 and what is danger zone?

Congratulations with your 07 550 Polska.
You do have some peculiar ideas with the bike IMO though.
The Husaberg 550 and 650 both have more power than your Ktm 525 as well as all the other lightweight dual sport and supermotos. If your going to install knobbies as you say and need more power in the dirt with your 550, lets see a Gopro video of it because its going to be good. Or maybe you would be happier with the 650?
Your 07 550 is pretty reliable without the Bullet Proof Husaberg Kit you are seeking to find. Just change oil frequently, keep valves in spec and follow up on known wear items and you will be ok.
The Titanium frame? I've never seen one. And the Husaberg frame is just fine. It doesn't crack and the motorcycle weighs 239lbs dry weight. It already is the lightest most powerful bike out there. Excuse me but the idea seems a bit ridiculous.
And the swingarm. Do you see a problem with it? I sure don't. The Forks? Maybe throw another brand on them?

I'm not purposely coming down on you. Its just that these kind of questions are definitely out of the norm when you have an awesome bike to go out and enjoy. So why not go with the flow.

Ride the bike first then if you want Do the titanium frame it's you bike. If it makes you happy and you can afford it why not? Like to see the weight savings?

Reading your post I didn't get any feeling that you were coming down on me or my ideas. It just felt that you were puzzled. Understandably since my ideas are out of the box. I can never leave things alone. I am always looking to improve things. Doubled power in my old tdi passat diesel and could beat newer v6 gas cars.I saw a truly beautiful titanium frame for a Ducatti. This would be a project way down the line. I just like power and torque. My sxf was not any slower than 550.

Today I was riding for the first time new to me '07 550 in supermoto guise. I really like it so far. Engine is freshly rebuild, updates done, dual valve springs, orangeberg mod for weep hole, roller bearings etc. Starts perfect, sounds really good and healthy.

My plans are to install two cooling fans, all dc magneto mod, install external spin on oil filter with cooler to cool oil and increase oil capacity.

I will be adding a MOTORCOTE OIL ADDITIVE - it is super lube of sorts that I have very good things to say about. I will be installing knobby tires. I have question to Orangeberg, Taffy, Bushy, Dr c and others with experience ; what other recommendations I might want to consider? For example, are you oldtimers still using Dello and Rotella synthetic 15 W 40 with good results? I see Lukas oil 5 w 40 full synthetic that is good for the latest mercedes diesel engine. I am long time car, then truck mechanic and I know that recent diesel engine oils have very high quality to withstand high mechanical pressures. Camshaft lobe pressure in unit injectors especially.

There's some really good coolant, what was it called?

Can someone make a list or a thread on HOW TO BULLET PROOF PRE '09 HUSABERG?

This would be really useful, perhaps make a kit??? What are some power mods on 550? No big bore kit??? Really? Power is like chips, or pistachios more is better, what you have at first is just not satisfying. You get more and THEN you feeling great!

Is there a possibility to find or have made a long life piston? Can you bore out liner on 550? 1,2,3 mm?

Has anyone ever made a titanium frame?

My 550 feels very similar power as my sold already '08 Ktm 450 sxf with Bondi engine but now I have six speeds and it is more special, more rare, that counts for me as well. I will keep for now 525 exc it feels good as well and Ktm was my first passion, some nostalgia remains and they are supposed to be very good engine with lots of mod potential.

Hello Polska,

increasing oil capacity is worth doing i run one of my bikes with a wet ignition and oil change is just over 2 L. a cooler however has been shown not to actually lower the oil temperature since it is quite low at 70 degC most of the time (this was done by user name "weed" or popup )

the oil cant be too slippery because our clutches are too small, delo 400 is perfect for these engines, in my bikes it lasts longer than motul 300V (becasue of the clutch slip with the motul) i do add moreys oil stabiliser to increase viscosity for my conditions (deep sand and often 40deg + C) lucas oils stabiliser is better for dirtbike engines as it doesn't contain sulfur. sulfur eats the silver metal plating on the big end cages.

evans coolant I think is the one but i dont use it. i use 50/50 water and glycol.

nobody can claim buletproofness lol thats more complete BS. the wrong mains fail even with correct axial play and even in a 450.

there is one member running NTN mains with zero axial play on a 644 (82mm stroke, flexible 32mm pin):eek::eek::eek: he built it years ago and its still running

except for the mains and the valve springs, stock is very very good for most people. all the aftermarket stuff i tried was worse than OEM in many respects. in my experience avoiding unnecessary aftermarket rubbish and sticking to the parts suppliers in my signature has been the way to keep my bikes happy.

some things that might help very gernally speaking: NTN roller main bearings and kibblewhite dual valve springs

other interesting stuff here: http://husaberg.org/mechanical/17998-bushmechanic-mongrel-628-trailbike.html

you can go to 105mm bore with an iron liner or 102 with the alloy one, IMHO the alloy is too weak even at 100mm in the 650s becasue its longer and unsupported at the front and back. in the 550 the liner is shorter so it might work ok at larger bore.

nobody has posted about doing this to a 550 but that doesn't mean it has not been done. issues are headgasket sealing and sourcing. but this has been solved. see thread "jbs700kit on 80mm welded crank"

spanner is building a very interesting engine with the 550 cases, search all his posts its very inspiring

imho the simplest "power" and longest lasting configuration of these engines is the 650 with an 80mm crank and 105mm bore, port the head and go slightly bigger valves. so you might look out for a set of 650 cases to build into a 700.

pistons are pretty much all the same life except for Pro X (avoid)

wossner is good, CP and JE are also, wiseco is ok. ELKO or mahle is the oem piston for the 628 (80mm crank 650) and at stock compression is also very very good.

a titanium or carbon frame would be very nice, i think if you did that then it would be wise to consider if you really like the stock geometry and ergonomics, i really dont like it for off road.

welcome to the site and have fun ;)

Hi Bushy! Thanks for your input, you included tons of super info.

First let me thank you for awesome info. This rocks! Very interested in wet ignition. Have tons of questions but I will just wait and read all I can tonight first. I enjoy that too. I have updated mains and valve springs allready so first will be cooling fans. If anyone knows of 650 engine or whole bike let me know please and thank you. Ntn mains is brand name or acronym for something else? I was thinking about starting a new post about parts suppliers and have all listed there. What do you think about that? Would be good to avoid overseas shipping cost. Another krazy idea - 3 d printed magnesium cases? When you are retired all crazy ideas would be super hobby, don't you think? Better than sitting at the beach I think.

As another note referring to you wanting to improve the frame by making it Titanium.
And without taking anything away from Bushy ,because what he has done suits him fine.
But I own a 2016 Ktm 500 exc. And Im very happy with it and it does handle great. But it does not feel or handle any better than my 2005 Fe650. In fact to me they handle very similar in a lot of ways.
So in my opinion again your Titanium frame would need to be pretty much and exact match in geometry or else you will probably make it worse.

Magnesium cases and water not a good idea unless you have the right additives. Don't ask me which??? Ate up the case on my 1986 Husqvarna they went back to a aluminum case

There you go! See, I was thinking of get new exc 500. Decided not to and went for these two. Other being '07 Exc 525, got it before I found da Berg. How do your bikes compare, power, handling overall feel?

When I said it doesnt handle any better I didnt mean bad. Because both handle awesome.
The 500 with FI is very smooth and tractable with plenty of power. The 650 berg does come with a little more vibration. But with the power it does give you more pretty much wherever you need it. That over the top power. But the 500 does not have the feeling of lacking. It has plenty in all situations.
And Btw. The best handling Ktms are the newest ones. Ive ridden an 02 and several friends that had 07s confess they dont compare to the new ones after riding them.
The new 500 feels great right out of the box. I had 180hrs on my Husaberg enduro before I sold it last year. I still have my Supermoto. But when I did decide to buy the 2016 FI Ktm500 I was immediately satisfied with the bike when I rode it. It was pretty cool because I spent time, mods and setup on my Husaberg that I put 180hrs on. And this new Ktm felt very similar with rider feel and the way it drops into turns.

And the reasons why I bought the KTM?
I took a break from off road for a year after I sold my 05 Husaberg 650. Too many bikes.
But I kept my 06 Husaberg 650 supermoto conversion with all the enduro take offs.
I saved up for a new bike but was set on having FI for elevation changes and just wanting something new. And a Ca street legal enduro
I had no interest in buying a carbed Ktm or else I never would have sold my Berg which is better than all the carbed KTMs.
And as we know Husaberg had been discontinued.
So it was either Beta, KTM or Husqvarna. Because I'm moving on with the future of what they have to offer in new bikes.
The Beta isn't big enough with parts suppliers and dealers for me.
The Husqvarna didn't have back up kickstart.
So it was the KTM.

I got my katum because I heard that this was the most reliable year/ model combo. I see big bore and some other stuff down the road. Thanks for sharing helpful info.

also yes there are several threads by Dr_C with pure bike ****

nice idea about 3d printed cases,

ill take both pastimes and ride on the beach with a bike i built ..

Well you did buy it for good reason. The 07 Ktms are known to be reliable.

It is interesting how guys with some experience will arrive at the same ideas to solve the problem. Reading through Bushies posts about main bearings I thought I would use spherical roller bearings. Reading more I see that is the best solution already been done with excellent results, just expensive. I also had similar idea to axpand the size of the clutch cover to hold more oil. What was the reason behind doing Kokusan project? Improved reliability and power? Down the line I wouldn't be surprised to find myself doing big bore and porting polishing to my katum.

Hey Bushie! One question.

I have been doing lots:eek: of reading here. I like a lot of the things that you have done with your bikes. Quick question, older Bergs had ignition that was not the best, is this the reason for doing kokusan ignition? Or was it to increase oil capacity? I thought that ignition was dry- no oil there, did you drill oil passage holes in there ? Cover  really good. Something special. Did you make any more since then? I in turn got my knobbies , waiting to put them on. Self employed sooooo busy. Thanks for any info.

Rebuild 550 Pictures!

I just received all of these from a guy that sold me thehttps://www.dropbox.com/sh/oeepib0xk...k7btmDO7a?dl=0 bike. Enjoy.
