Looking for a new 5.00x17 silver wheel...

I know this should probably go in the wanted section but it is as much a request for information on where I might find one as it is a wanted add - hopefully the moderators agree with my liberal interpretation..:)

My spanking new bike has a 4.25 wheel and I wanted the 5.00 - I'll trade if anyone's interested but I am betting that is an unattractive offer so I am hoping someone might know where I could get a cush hub 5x17 at an attractive price.

My current 4.25 x17 will probably end over my fireplace as weird, expensive mantel piece.

Cheers

Hey Mark,

I don't have a 5 inch rim I'm willing to part with but what I would suggest is that you look in the direction of buying a 5" rear rim and then getting it laced up to your current 4.25" hub. KTM sell a rear rim that will fit fine and there should be a number of other manufacturers that'll do something similar.

Obviously it is cheaper than a complete wheel setup too.

Hope this helps,
Simon

HI Simon,

Relacing is an option I am currently pursuing, but have concerns about offsets - are these wheels truly centered?

I have not taken the wheel off to do my own measurements yet...

I have my suspicions that since I am incapable of properly lacing my own wheels (I have tried several times over my lifetime) that the labour to relace will out strip the cost of a complete wheel.

I'll keep ya posted...

Mark,

There should be no way re-lacing and a new rim should outway a complete wheel in price, not even close. But if you do go that route make sure they upgrade to higher tensile spokes - the 5" rim needs them. Other than that, keep a good eye out on e-bay or somesuch and you might be lucky.

Interesting - I hadn't even considered that there would be a spoke change.

So all the 4.25s come with 'lighter' spokes than the 5.00 wheels?

Can you provide the 'spec' for the heavier rated spokes - are they spec'd by diameter or actual tensile strength in MPa/

Cheers and thank you for this information - you just saved me a big pile of grief.

Mark,

I didn't get involved in any discussion regarding tensile strength. I had my original wheel re-laced with the new rim and spokes snapped every time I rode. So I took the wheel to the shop and asked to get it relaced with some hardier spokes.

Cheers,
Simon

Yup!

Great bunch to deal with - Jeff has offered to help me with my problem... :)
