Lightened FE650 Flywheel

Anybody run a lightened flywheel on their 650. It made a difference on my CR500 and am thinking of trying it on my 650.

Thanks for the info!

Do you think an even lighter flywheel would be of benefit?

I have heard on here, Facebook, and other web page regarding running a lighter flywheel and its benefits. Since I want to retain the eStart/charging I have been diligently and with some struggle to find a nice used 04-08 flywheel in the price range I am willing to pay.

It appears I found one and will be doing the same lightening mods I did to my MSV Racing CR500 lightened flywheel which I love.

Once this happens I will run the OEM weight and vs lightened back to back on the same trail and give my thoughts.

I am trying to load a pic of the MSV Racing modded CR5 flywheel and Photobucket is acting up lol

We'll patiently look forward to your results by the year 2020. jk

Alright, I have my new to me flywheel coming from Germany to Oregon USA. I will follow the MSV Racing CR500 template for modifying this flywheel. It looks fragile, but has withstood many high RPM pulls on N2O with on issues.

Intersting. If it doesn't have the desired effect You can remove a huge amount of weight from the crank relatively easily

If it's anything like the other MSV Racing CR500 builds, it should be a rocket! MSV Racing is world famous for building CR500 motors! ;)

Here is a pic and the weights I have for the 08 Husaberg fe650- 832 gr, 91 CR500- 566gr, 91 MSV Racing CR500- 441gr, and 08 KTM 505 XC-F/SX-F- 426gr

My plan is to reduce the circumference and weight of the Husaberg and KTM flywheels at least as much as the MSV Racing's CR500 -125gr, -2mm off circumference and -2mm off the face.

I have a plan mapped out and hopefully next week I should have one of the 2 done. I suspect I can get more weight off both since they are billet.

the rule of flywheels is that they should be broad in daimeter and carry their weight near the rim. this gives them the most momentum.

also, a 650 loses a lot of momentum coming up on the 4th stroke which is the toughest stroke: the compression stroke.

but it has to be said that the FS/FC flywheel does pep them up!

there is a company named stealy in the USA that make flywheel weights. get the dimensions of yours right and you should be OK? the 2004-8 had a similar flywheel to KTMs....just goes round the other way!

I would be interested in a review of the oem flywheel lightened.
I might be willing to do it to mine at some point. Im thinking slightly lightened just to enhance the bike and nothing drastic.

I am going drastic.

What do you consider slight, as in how many grams less weight than OEM?

I wouldn't be too sure but maybe from the oem 832gram down to around 700? Its all new to me anyway.Testing would be best as you say.

It just so happens I have 2 650 flywheels. I will drastically lighten the first one and give a review. If it is awesome I will machine the second the same and put it up for sale. If not I will cut the reduction in half and go from there. Stay tuned for a ride review with GoPro in August.
