Lightened FE650 Flywheel

I have the 04-08 Husaberg fe650 and 08 KTM 505 XC-F (fits 20 different KTM vehicles) flywheels designed in SolidWorks and the 505 will be finished machining tomorrow. Solidworks says that the 650= 832gr will be a least 270.91gr lighter= 561.09gr the 505= 426gr will be at least 153.8gr lighter= 272.2gr.

I say at least because when CNC machining started it was realized that the 505 magnets are shorter in height and more material was able to be removed then calculated using SolidWorks model.

I am hoping the same for the 650. Exact weights and over all reductions in diameter will be given when done.

505 XC-F flywheel done. 166gr removed = 61% lighter and 4mm off diameter. Also computer balanced.

I will give this flywheel a try next week with back to back comparison between OEM and MSV Racing Lightened

I did something similar with an XR650 flywheel once. However, I was working on a lathe and ended up only removing weight from the OD and the work amounted to not more than about 100 grams of improvement. Could hardly tell when riding the bike so I suspected that most of the flywheel effect in that engine comes from the crank. Never thought to mill the flywheel like you're doing. That's brilliant!
 
Finally had a little time in the record breaking heat of Southern Oregon to do the MSV Racing lightened flywheel swap on the KTM 505! Test evaluation in the future. Plus, the 650 in the near.....I hope future!

I have heard on here, Facebook, and other web page regarding running a lighter flywheel and its benefits. Since I want to retain the eStart/charging I have been diligently and with some struggle to find a nice used 04-08 flywheel in the price range I am willing to pay.

It appears I found one and will be doing the same lightening mods I did to my MSV Racing CR500 lightened flywheel which I love.

Once this happens I will run the OEM weight and vs lightened back to back on the same trail and give my thoughts.

I am trying to load a pic of the MSV Racing modded CR5 flywheel and Photobucket is acting up lol

The last of the CR500E street reg type has a heavy flywheel and they's does not go very well does they precious. no they don't even when you de restrict them.:laughing8:
 
I was finally able to get the lightened MSV Racing Husaberg fe650 flywheel on the bike for basic testing.

Specs- OEM weighs 834gr the lightened MSV weighs 591= -243gr difference and the diameter was reduced 2mm. 3rd in the pic is the 650 FC flywheel which is 510gr

I could tell the bike has quicker acceleration and the engine braking seemed to be a hair stronger. So far I like it a lot!

I believe this will be a great alternative for the FE crowd who wants to keep their eStart/battery charging, but benefit from the lighter flywheel vs changing over to the non-charging FC etc. systems.

i think you've done very well there fella and should be congratulated. very little impresses me about UHE nowadays but this is a good simple mod.

I would have advised that you go to 3 spokes at 120d each - that I would say about it.
