the one you jetted is with or without the 540 kit?

Hi Oyk,
Same bike, same day.
I was contracted to enhance the overall throttle response. The additional peak power is simply a bonus.

Dale

PS
Sorry for the earlier confusion. I since edited the post to be more clear.

Dale, How is the JD jet kit?
Compare and contrast to the LR jet kit?
How is it a 540RFS with a pipe and cam does not break 50rwhp?
Rag in the airbox?
What was the torque curve like?

Hi SFO,

1. Better than OEM.
2. Lean on the bottom / rich on the top.
3. Power peaks before 9K rpm.
4. 36 ft lb / Relatively flat and user friendly.

Dale

Those cool Blue Lineaweaver / Husaberg oil plugs? Yep, SFO made them.

Dale,
Have you put one of your cams in a KTM engine? I had to replace the intake valves on my 250 at 120 hours. They tuliped so badly, that swivel tappet was adjusted all the way out till it hit the rocker.

What was the throttle change like on that KTM? Is it as snappy as a Honda?

Do you have a version of your jet kit for the 37mm carb? The 250rfs uses the same carb as the Honda and Yamaha 250 four strokes. Right now I am using a James Dean kit in it.

Thanks.

Hi Brendan,

"Have you put one of your cams in a KTM engine? I had to replace the intake valves on my 250 at 120 hours. They tuliped so badly, that swivel tappet was adjusted all the way out till it hit the rocker."
Sorry, No.

"What was the throttle change like on that KTM? Is it as snappy as a Honda?"
It is relative. The engine simply ran better overall.

Sorry, No.

Background:
Using two sets of wheels the bike is used for general offroad and Motard. The owner is a longtime client / friend and motorcycle instructor / police officer. He formerly owned a ZX9 which I outfitted with a quartet of 41 mm FCR carburetors. As a result he had very high expectations regarding his FCR equipped KTM. His bike as delivered did not run bad, It simply did not perform to his standards.

Best Regards,
Dale

i'm double guessing here and may be hung for it but i think mr lineweaver has lowered the MJ considerably for a major part of his results. (+ a needle profile change to boot).

JD always did over jet his bikes and anyone who has read the thread that made TT - "jetting Qs" can see this. howeverthere is no doubting dale knows what a bike wants.

Dale,

Regarding the JD jet kit, I am assuming that "Lean on the bottom / rich on top" refers to the JD jetting. That has not been my experience with JD jetting in my 39 mm FCR equipped KTM 525 EXC. I have found that the richer (blue) needle is actually too rich on the bottom at any elevation over 3,000 feet, even in its leanest position. The leaner (red) needle has worked out very well for me for my riding conditions (generally between 3,000 to 8,000 feet elevation). I do, however, generally use a somewhat smaller main jet than JD recommends.

As ever,
Chas

Hi Chas,
I was indeed refereing to the JD kit.

Lean and rich are simply relative terms (ie lean or rich as compared to what) I employed to describe the KTM as delivered with a JD kit installed.

As I stated earlier "the bike did not run bad" it simply did not live up to my clients expectations.

One must keep in mind that the best ridden is the best known. :D
(ie What are you using as a reference?)

Dale

I must ask. There's two hp difference on those graphs. Is that at all noticeable? I take it that these dynoruns were done the same day/conditions?

Same day, same bike, same dynamometer, same dynamometer operator (me) and same conditions. As a matter of fact the runs were taken within an hour of one another.

Kind Regards,
Dale
