Kick starting an FE400 - technique?

Hi All

OK first up - I feel like a bit of a numpty today - having taken my berg to dave clarke racing (berg expert) to look at what I thought was a starting problem - dave got it going in 2 minutes flat (drained carb and kicked it) - there were some other issues (valve clearances, plug & lead) which he sorted out - but generally, it was because I wasn't kicking it properly (having just made the transition from sports bikes to enduros... I'm not used to this malarkey!)

Now dave did show me how to start it.... press down on the kick start but not all the way, up half way then down a quarter to feel for TDC... up all the way then a full swing and it should go - no throttle but choke on... Sounds simple I thought, even I couldnt get that wrong...

After he started it a few times I was happy it was running fine. So home I went to try it myself.... OK - choke on, no throttle, press down slowly - up and down again - feels right - kick and nothing.....

I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it going on the first, second or even 3rd kick - last night took me about half an hour of trying and my foot is knackered today! Its the last thing I want when Im stuck out on the bike and I'm slowly losing interest - especially as I can't walk this morning!!!

So please help! What on earth am I doing wrong? Whats the technique? Dave Clark seemed to start it fine - mind you he's been racing them for years, but I refuse to believe its that hard that I can't work it out!!! What does everyone else do? I started last night just by feeling for TDC to make sure I had it - but when I checked in the inspection hole the ignition marks were no where near lined up.....

Help!

Hey rmgcook,

it's a good idea to put your bike type & year in your "nik" as I think Taffy calls it. We all know what your on then without asking every time you post.

Check out the "Owners Doc" on the left & see if there's anything in there to help first. If DCR can start it over & over again it ain't broke. It makes for a bigger kick if you lean the bars against a wall till you get the technique right. From cold I normally give a half squirt on the throttle to prime the carby (with the choke on), then not again until it starts. I've got a button though...wouldn't swap it for the world.

Good luck

Ah Cheers Wildman - I've added it to my sig! (I think...!)

After talking to a friend - I've obviously been flooding the thing once it doesnt go after a few attempts. I've tried different variations - choke / no choke, giving it some throttle to prime it, or not touching the thottle at all... eventually when it started last night there were a few pops from the exhaust - presumably as I'd flooded it - so I'm going to give it another go tonigt but my foot really hurts, I've been trying it on a step with my right foot, but eventually I need to get the hang of it with my left so I like your idea of leaning it against a wall as I can use my left foot then!!!

Any other ideas how to get this going and avoid me flooding the thing?

Cheers
Robin

Just reading the owners doc... I wonder if moving the kicker forward a bit will help - doesnt seem to engage for a couple of inches of movement....

One other question... been reading the owners docs a bit more - lots of useful info, but how do I know when Im at TDC with auto decomp? Like I said at the start - I'm struggling finding it....

Hi, know the feeling but if the bike is set up ok then it really is technique..Type "Chestnut" in the UHE search facility & one of my (& many other similar) threads will come up...2 pages of "that old kick start chestnut".

It took me 6 months to get the technicque right (old berg owners can't understand this issue) but once you've found TDC and gone JUST past, it's so easy. To find TDC with auto de comp, just keep gently pressing down on the lever until you feel most resistance. You'll get a feel for it in the end.

PS Having said all that I snapped my KS shaft a couple of weeks ago...it's not the force of the kick it's the fluid movement from the right place...Good luck.

cheers for the info - and I'll take a read of the thread - I'm pretty certain this is the reason I'm having no joy... I envy berg veterans! The person who looked at my bike started it first time.... I can only dream of that at the moment!!!

Smug B***sds aren't they. Still, we'll be there one day. PS I still have to lean mine up against a wall or post to guarantee a first time start (be careful - thats probably how I fractured my KS shaft - too much force) - moved onto standing on a kerb or brick, and now I know it's technique I'm developing the sitting down route (difficult for a short a**s like me).

Since your bike is apparently an electric start model (FE400e), what happens when the e-start button is activated?

well - 1st day back from being looked at it started fine on the e start (never done that before!!), and it starts from warm fine too... however last night I tried to kick it first, then tried the e start - but by that point I suspect I'd flooded it as it didn't start.... and now the battery is almost dead so its going to have to be kicked. Armed with information from various posts & owners docs I'll give it a go tonight - I suspect it is setup fine now as its only just come out of the garage (berg specialist), so I think its going to be more down to technique (or my lack of it!)

How is the leg :D :D

I think everyone who can kick a berg first or second kick has had to go through this learning curve so don't be disheartened. My 650 kicks second kick every time sometimes even first from cold, even though its got a good lecky boot i still kick her because it puts less strain on the battery, so FWIW heres my tuppence worth

First you need clean plug , clean fuel so if you don't use yer bike for more than a couple of weeks drain the carb bowl , also keep a check on valve clearance, every oil change i do mine and it don't take that long after a few goes

Now to kick her.... NO throttle, choke on (make sure you pull out the cold start NOT the HOT start button if its a FCR (not sure with dellortoS )) ...... now to find that elusive TDC , slowly turn engine with kicker until you feel a resistance, (from what ive found the auto de-comp don't operate at slow revs, so your compression approaching TDC will be quite substantial, or a lot, now at this point you will need to use the manual de-comp. Thats the small lever near the clutch , The clutch is the.........only kidding. .Heres were ya need to be gentle turning just past and ONLY !! just past TDC ...So its up to the resistance , de-comp in and then a bit further ...KINELL its like jackanory ... :D :D NOW is the time to pray offer a young virgin for sacrifice  or wotever Remember no gas just let go with one full-swing of kick ..as mentioned B4 , its not about power its a full fluid movement (feel that at this point i should say always wear boots and read the label) :)

Now if at this point you hear a weird kinda strange rumble don't get to concerned thats the sweet sound off a Berg 8) 8)

A useful technique is to put the bike on the stand, climb on and stand up, balancing so not to put too much weight on the stand. You can then kick the bike over like you would if it was Lent against a wall. Very useful when out on a trail and there's nothing to lean against.

Cheers for the info...

Oh- the foot is sore as hell!

OK - I managed to start it this evening - took me about 15 mins though! But when it started - it felt "right" when I finally found TDC.. I'm just having problems repeating it - with the auto decomp it doesnt seem to be as easy as with manual.....

Battery is on charge at the moment so I'll give it another go tomorrow......

Sounds like your on your way now. If you charge your battery & it starts to need kicking again after a while you may need a new battery. Otherwise just enjoy the ride brother.

Well not given up just yet... I stuck it on ebay the other night after killing my foot and I was annoyed with the thing! But Going to give it another go tomorrow - I want to keep it really as its a great ride - when I can get it going.... so hopefully I'll figure it out soon...! Been chucking it down all day though so not tried yet..

At least yer pikeybay add sounds honest .....Is their not a manual de-comp on the fe 400 then? I just presumed they were on all Bergs
