Keep the crud out of the weep hole

Haskell in Idaho told me about this fix he made for his 09 570 to keep the junk out of the weep hole, and the water pump shaft area. Anyone who has replaced their water pump seal on the 09 on up bikes has probably found a good deal of grit in the area between the water pump seal and the engine oil seal.

The weep hole is at 3 'o clock, so anything that get's in there can't just fall out. And to make matters worse, the weep hole points forward, so when riding through a stream or mud, it naturally ends up on the weep hole and then ends up down inside between the seals.

Haskell recommended that I just get a piece of 1/8th" tubing from the home improvement cent, cut it to length, put a dab of epoxy, I used JB weld steel, on the tube and gently tap it in the weep hole and then attach a short piece of tubing to it and secure with a small piece of safety wire to keep the crud out, yet you can still see if you are losing a seal. You do have to pull the water pump housing off to get to it, but the juice is worth the squeeze!

What's the little brass bit?

I'm not sure what you're talking about, can you please be more specific?

Does this photo help?

Ah, I get it now, aluminum tubing...did you have to drill anything out? It looked like brass tubing there. Didnt see the safety wire in it, it looked like a bit of barbed tubing off an old carb drain...

Just came back from the small local hobby shop. Found 1/8" brass tubing with hose (for R/C airplane gas tanks) for $2. Cut down about 1" of tubing attached hose...tapped it into the hole with a socket on a long extension...kinda like driving a fencepost.

Why didn't they do this at the factory? It was just that easy.

Nice tip, Dale!

I'm now at 2020 miles and have seen a *lot* of mud and stream crossings.
Should I remove the cover to do check-n-clean first?

Cheers! E-Ticket

You would have to pull at least one of the seals out to get to the area in between to get the crud out. If you have the time, then I would do it now before the grit ruins your water pump shaft.

I bought a 04 650 in early march and that crud saved me a couple grand, wore the water pump shat down so had to split the motor. And its now getting new main bearings new kick start shaft and bearings and god knows wat els. Pitty i only got to put 2 hours on it before the water seel let go. Covered by dealers warranty tho lukily

Happy roosting and im def doing this as soon as i get her back :)

Excellent tip Dale! You inspired me. I have not even ridden my new bike off road yet and it already has your weep hole mod. Even managed to get the tubing in Husaberg blue :D

I have a bunch of tubing left over, so I am sharing the wealth. Some guys form Canada on KTM Talk are getting some from me. Spreading the joy you know...

can't find 1/8" tubing here in Iowa anywhere, please sell me a piece for my 570 before heading to Colorado
Thanks
David

I can't find a piece of 1/8" tubing either, 5/32" is the smallest I could locate in any hobby shop in western Illinois or eastern Iowa. Would someone like to sell me a piece also??
thanks

PM me your email address and I will get the ball rolling to get you some 1/8th tubing.........

Which tubing is that, the metal stuff or the other? I'd love to grab some, I'm thinking of doing this mod soon!

thanks for the great info guys, finally sourced the materials and did it yesterday. took ages to find a hobby store that stocked the brass tube and hose for the fuel systems on model planes. finally an inexpensive mod, $1.30 for the brass tube and the hose thrown in for free (in husaberg blue :D ).

if it's any help, i found it was much easier to install after filing the edges down on the brass tube. i could then just place it in the hole, then tap it in with a long screwdriver. didn't have to take any parts of the bike this way to get access.

pics have already been included, but took this one from further out in case any mechanical noobs (like me) don't actually know where this weephole is.

Thank you, this is a really helpful topic!

I took my 2010 FE 450 water pump housing off to check what direction the Husaberg factory installed the seal. Yep, it was installed backwards, with the shaft retaining spring facing inwards. It was very easy to remove the seal using a slightly curved pick tool, carefully inserted where the shaft meets the inner seal.

Not a lot of crud behind the water pump seal, but there was definitely some very fine brown silt (dust). I'm in Arizona, so this is common to our riding areas. Silt is super-fine, and is probably worse for your bike than sand.

I cleaned everything up, installed a fresh seal (in the correct direction), and also did the weep hole tubing modification. I ran a slightly longer piece of 1/8" hose, and used a small line clip to keep the hose in place on one of the forward case bolts.

By the way, I was able to find 1/8" pipe and vinyl tubing at Ace Hardware.

Thanks again for all the help!
