Keep the crud out of the weep hole

The problem:

This is how mine looked:

Mine was leaking some drops of cooling liquid, so I thought i'd better wrench in right now. The fine crud on the back of the wheel didn't look very promising (German mine dust).

But the next photo shows a mixture of dust and sand:

Made sense that it started leaking. Just to be on the safe side, I replaced both seals.

Tapped some 4mm thread.

New waterseal but also placed new oil seal. That is best done when the waterpump axle is completely removed.

Put some teflon tape on the threads to make them seal better.

The endresult: no oil leaking, no water. Everything is ok now.

I took my 2010 FE 450 water pump housing off to check what direction the Husaberg factory installed the seal. Yep, it was installed backwards, with the shaft retaining spring facing inwards. It was very easy to remove the seal using a slightly curved pick tool, carefully inserted where the shaft meets the inner seal.

Not a lot of crud behind the water pump seal, but there was definitely some very fine brown silt (dust). I'm in Arizona, so this is common to our riding areas. Silt is super-fine, and is probably worse for your bike than sand.

I cleaned everything up, installed a fresh seal (in the correct direction), and also did the weep hole tubing modification. I ran a slightly longer piece of 1/8" hose, and used a small line clip to keep the hose in place on one of the forward case bolts.

By the way, I was able to find 1/8" pipe and vinyl tubing at Ace Hardware.

Can I please get you to "pass it forward" given this is an older post response? You comment on the seal being installed backwards from the factory. When you referenced the spring, are you talking about the tiny spring you find in most seals that squeeze the seal onto the shaft that are part of the seal? I just found this post and I am going to do the mod but figure I might as well do it right and check the innards out to see if they are ok. Your seal comment caught me by surprise as the thread doesn't really get into it. Hmm.....maybe there are other posts on this point. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Yes. Spring should be out, flat metal surface towards the motor. Makes driving it in a bit of a pain.

I read about this when I first got my Berg and got some 1/8” aluminum tubes cut about 3" and pushed one end into the weeping hole.

The I bent the tube and pointed it right over the heater pipe.

Its pointed down so its less likely to get clogged. Also every once in a while I can pull it out and make sure its clean.

The 1/8” tubing fits perfectly.

Today ,I smelled coolant while riding. I looked down and saw there is coolant dripping out of the tube over the header. Great early warning system! I could have ridden for much longer till I notice the leak.
