How tight is the clutch hub to the shaft splines on a FE650 supposed to be? I noticed when first fitting a Rekluse cluch that the hub came off very easily once the circlip was removed and did not need any of the gentle "persuasion " mentioned in the instructions.

After some hard testing and the addition (twice) of thicker plates to get the clearance down the cluch hub has slacked off immensely and is very loose on the splines. Is this a common trait?

I also notice that earlier hubs were actually held down by a nut...is this a better idea rather than relying on the interference fit of the splines alone?

Anyone have a mod for this that I dont know about?

mine is just a nice slide fit on. i would replace it ASAP and save the gearbox shaft while you can. neutral should improve and i would get an engineer to clip the top of those 'posts' down instead of using a file in the garden shed!

a nut would have been better here but i take it that this is a rare problem.

The hub is already scrapped and a new one ordered.

The shaft is OK but I am surprised at the amount of wear in such a short period. My logic tells me that the hub must have been in the initial stages of wear when the clutch was fitted.

The posts are not a cause of the problem as they were milled accurately on my Bridgeport. I do find the shim washers used behind the hub to be a poor fit though considering the size of the post and the c/s. I think Rekluse have used an off-the-shelf part for this rather than designing something specific. I am going to make my own shims which will be a better fit.

good idea and good luck. i'll be getting my engineer to do the same!

when we used to road race we used to have the plates checked on a flat bed and they would then be 'scroll ground'.
