How can I check how much the idle speed is set to? Pretty hard just by listening...

Stupid answer, get a tachometer. You could use one from almost anything. I multimeter might work to, set at frequency. None of this available? Well, put the bike on a stand, start it, put it in first gear, and use a stopwatch to time how long it takes to turn the rear wheel 10 times, and do the math. Gear ratios are available in the downloads section. This would not be as exact, but would get you close.

PS- 1800rpm is idle for these.

Since the ignition fires twice every four strokes you may have to half your tachometer reading.

gear ratio

Can you explain how to calculate with the gear ratio.
The gear ratio at 1 gear is 14/33 -2,357. What time should 10 times be then at 1800 rpm.

Primary ratio= 29:78
1st gear= 14:33
Chain= 15:48

1800RPM*(29/78)*(14/33)*(15/48)=88.7rpm at the rear wheel

This ends up being around 7.29mph (11.7kph your units), which seems about right to me.

Also, that should be easy to count, because it is a little more than 1 turn per second (88rpm). Place a piece of tape on a lug, and use your wall clock.

Also, these numbers should be modified to your bike, I used my bikes ratios.

BUT, as was said, a tach would be easier. Husabutt is right, it fires every turn, so half the number.

Hope this helps.

PS- the longer you time, or should I say, the more times the wheel turns, the more accurate a number you will get. But, if you watched for 80 or so turns with a stopwatch, you should be able to get it pretty close.
