Hussa bites back - CAUTION: Gory picture!

Hi folks, long time no post.... I've been in my study bunker with my degree course, but have a summer break now until mid to end August! Good times.

We've had some work done on the house recently so the bike has been in storage for a while (2 -3 months).

Since returning to our garage, I've noticed I cannot start off the button. I've charged the battery fully, but no joy. It does not seem to have the Amps to turn the motor, or starter motor races over the top.

Anyway, bit of background, I decided to go for a blurt in North Wales the other night, so proceeded to kick him over. OUCH!

Bike kicked back & hit the upper part of my calf. It smarted, but the pain subsided & I headed off. Little later on was feeling a bit "light headed". I also felt one leg was really sweaty, so looked down & noticed jeans were soaking wet with blood. Not for the faint hearted, but this is what I saw when I got home & could take a look....

7 stitches & a bit of bruising.

Long story short, I'd like to get the bike firing off the button from now on. I've seen a previous post about a Lithium battery with 150 Amp crank power, which also seems lightweight, which is an added bonus. I'm in contact with the suppliers to look at getting one (in Cali, so hope they can ship to UK - http://ebattonline.com/index.html ).

For a 2004, is there something that may have failed/become faulty causing this difficulty? I've read that really a 2004 should not need upgrades to start off the button, and as I mentioned, it has started before, but will not any more.

Any advice would be appreciated?

Thanks

Crispin

Ouch! Hope that heals up soon.

For the battery, it might be worth also looking at Super B. They only quote 120A for starting, but I had one in my 450 Husky for a year with no problems at all. Charges up real quick once you're running so it holds up better than the standard battery on days where you're stopping a lot. Also small and very light. They do two different sizes so you could go for the bigger one if you want to be really safe, but the smaller one worked for me. I think it's a Dutch company but you should be able to get them in the UK from http://www.mpsracing-enduro.co.uk/superbinfo.php. Don't know how the pricing compares with that you're looking at, but shipping would be cheaper and no import tax to pay.

Thanks chaps, will give those battery links a go, thanks for your posts!

I had issues with starting my 501 FE and that bit but not too bad! The issue in the end was the spring in the decompression system, I had made it worse by jacking the amps up and knackering the starter motor in an attempt to find out what was wrong. It was also a beast to try and kick unless it had stopped at the correct position for an easy start. The solution came after a chat with Taffy, (he has uprated starter motors and batterys) and an investigation of the decomp system. It might save you a few quid to find out what the problem is before new batteries and starters. My bike now starts easily on the button, and is consistently easy to kick over. It no longer tries to push my shin out of my knee cap when kicking it either. Hope this helps?!

Same thing happened to me 2 years ago. Icy floor, bad shoes, 4 stiches in the exact same spot!
I am more careful now!

I'm an E-starter too, after my beast sprained BOTH my ankles... True,,,, I was so desperate to ride it after the first incident, so i taped and wrapped it up with everything I could think off, so I could just lean on it as I gave it a go with the other fot... = 2 Sprained ankles...

Fitted the an upgraded autodecomp + new spring + battery + sprague + torque limiter.... and it has startet on the button ever since. It was worth the money !!!

Evening Crispin, if you get in touch with BillBerg he has a contact in the UK who makes the lightweight high amp batteries. I've got a Varta (from Bardens) 7amp in my 650 that starts it from cold without any problems so that could be worth a look too, obviously you'll need to make sure your sprague and starter clutch are 100% too.

Hi folks, thanks for the contacts, I've been in touch with a few, and have some prices etc.

Just before I part with my hard earned, I thought I'd share a brief video of my attempts to start off the button.

I'm not sure if this "racing" of the starter is because the battery does not have the amps to turn the engine over, or there may be a separate issue (i.e. that a new high-powered battery will not solve)?

If anyone has any ideas/advice i'd really appreciate it?

Many Thanks

Mine broke 2 bones in my foot a few years back when I was new to Bergs, wrong top dead centre is your problem, get the wrong TDC and it will be quite ferocious. I only did it once mind, after that I would kick it slowly until I found the right TDC then it would fire 1st kick every time.
I can imagine you hoping round the garage though shouting some rather crude words for a good few minutes!

Yes, I think words like "bloody bounder", "flip" & "crikey" were used.... :cuss:

Yeah, just a final question I've never been sure of, are you supposed to do owt with the decompression lever whilst trying to start of the button. The video above includes with & without, so you can see the starter clutch issue still affects both, however, somebody told me you should hold in the lever initially, let the engine turn a few times to get up to speed, then dump the lever?

I've never really been sure if there is a optimum procedure for e-starting in this way, OR it should just start by simply pressing the button (with use of the cold start on/off obviously).

Thanks

Geez, on mine I just push the button with no throttle and it goes within a turn or 2, cold (with choke) or hot (no choke obviously). I feel fortunate. I also get 2 kick cold starts and 1 kick hot....... I love my Berg.

Thanks Bonegraft, it was more a question of decompression lever use & not the throttle, was that what you were refering to?

Cheers

Hope your healing up Crispin, never use the manual de-comp on the 450 and removed it from the 650 when i fitted the dutch clog cam de-comp.

Carl

Nice one, cheers pal! :)

Took the stitches out a few days ago, scabbing gone, looks like a nasty scar, but hey, Hussa war wounds are always impressive amongst your chums!

Thanks

Crispin
