Hussa bites back - CAUTION: Gory picture!

Hussa war wound below....

Have got the starter clutch repair kit from Taffy, and have just purchased a 1999 R6 starter motor.

Will get the starter clutch slippage issue fixed first, then I'll have a go at the R6 starter motor fitting myself.

Looks like I need only get some longer attachment bolts and spacers to fit the R6 motor??

Cypher (or anyone else who might know), looking at this previous post (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8238&start=15), is this all that is needed to fit the R6 motor, i.e. no drilling at other end etc as referenced in the users manual for the CBR, ( Discovered by Scully, the CBR600 starter motor was first tried byefore the R6 was discovered (Ned37) to be quicker turning. It's stronger than the OEM item and fits straight in from the outside EXCEPT that the mounting bracket has to be fitted from the later model ('05 plus) or the original modified (Ned37)see the photo below. The back of the starter must be drilled and then carefully shimmed up to sit squarely in the engine case. This is very important, early tests show an 8.5mm spacer should be used. Loonyberg fitted the Honda starter and it was really easy!.)?

Not sure if all R6 starters are the same size but the one i fitted was longer than the original, i cut the excess off of the mounts, re-drilled to suit and used the off cuts as spacers. If i get achance i'll take a picture tomorrow and post it.

Nice one Carl, that would be most usefull! If poss, could u specify which year ur motor was, I bought a 1999 spec.

Many thanks

Thanks to those that have posted, I've got a fair idea of what I'm doing now to fit the R6 motor.

Simply put, the R6 starter motor is too long end to end (including the mounting "arms"). So I need to drill new holes in the arms, but up close nearer to the starter motor cap to align with the existing bracket hole positions on the bike, and then the excess of the starter motor arms can either be cut off or left "as is".

To my understanding there are no vertical height adjustments needed at the spline end of the starter motor as in the CBR set-up (presumably because the diameter of both the OEM starter motor & the R6 are the same), but I will need to just add spacers to the bracket end to lift this to align symmetrically to give a horizontal plane of the spline into the gear assembly in the clutch casing.

Nice one, I'll have a go when the starter clutch is done, but interested to see if the mere fix of the slippage actually results in reliable starts off the button using the 2004 OEM starter, before swapping to the R6 & buying a beefy new battery (SUPER-B reportedly double the crank amps of the existing at approx 240 Amps).... lets wait and see what happens when it stops spinning all the time.... :?:

Thanks again

Crispin

Looks like you've got it covered there Crispin, photo of my mount up above, not pretty but does the job. The two spacers between new starter and mount are 8mm.

My '07 bracket is different to that, slightly offset. Do the same fitting instructions still apply for height using the 8.5mm spacer?

Hi Bofwool, not sure why you would need an R6 starter motor for an 07?? Are you having problems trying to start off the button on your 07?

Crispin

Thats correct. fixed the sprague and shimmed up the gear and it still wont start so a new battery and starter is on the cards. It would be nice to be able to hop on my e-start bike and hit the button and have it start, it used to only do it when it was warm and now it wont do it at all.

Ahh righ.

For the battery, the most powerful cold crank amps I have seen so far was for the "Super B", attached is some info for it (there are 2 sizes, the bigger one has double the crank Amps for 10 seconds compared to the smaller version).

Here is the link (kindly provided by Petem originally);

Sorry, not got any experience of the 07 or bracket design, has anyone else ever tried this R6 starter motor mod on an 07?

Cheers

Crispin,

Your video very much sounds like the sprague clutch slipping. I had the same sound, and shimming the slipperclutch did not do anything. Changing the sprague clutch did.

Let us know how u get on ...

Cheers buddy, I'll look into that, may as well do the lot whilst the engines apart to b safe (assuming not megabucks).

Thanks for the info

I'm new to the 'Berg scene myself, just bought a 501 for supermoto riding... love it!

The dealer that supplied my bike (Midwest Racing nr Melksham), walked me thro' the start-up technique and, following their instructions, I always get it fired-up first full kick, hot or cold.

Kick the engine over softly (whilst on the s/stand, as opposed to sitting on the bike), to find TDC (you'll feel the piston 'slot' into TDC doing this), then full kick with moderate effort, making sure you pull your boot away shortly after the bottom of the kick stroke.

For me it works... simples... now - no more talk of this girly 'lecky starter malarky, OK! lol

Hope it works for you...

Hi guys,

Have had the starter motor gear assembly slippage issue fixed, (thanks Taffy for the parts and advice).

The next obstacle seemed to be the power of the battery, even fully charged it just did not have the grunt to turn over the engine properly.

So....have purchased a "Super B" battery (see link; http://www.mpsracing-enduro.co.uk/superbinfo.php).

Now thats exactly what you get, I have fitted (via crimping), two opposing connectors (red & black from the pic above) to the wiring loom side & plugged them in together.

Now.. the problem. There was an earthing cable from the starter motor to .... I think the battery terminal?

I still have this cable in my job tray of bits, but now I can't quite remember if this is how it connects.

Does it connect the starter motor & black battery terminal???

If so, I suppose I need to think up an ingenious connection to the battery connector (e.g. strip the normal connector the earth cable has fitted & twist with the new black connector wire & re-crimp???

Any help appreciated? :(

Thanks

Crispin

My 650 battery earth is bolted to the starter motor mount and the only wire on the starter is the red wire which comes from the solonoid. Starter motor is bolted directly to engine via the earthed bracket.
Hope this helps.

Thanks very much BERGBRO, yes silly me... I had the wiring wrong, have looked up in the user manual & got the pics as reference.

Well, I can say I am well chuffed!! Starts 1st time, EVERY time off the button now!!!!

Happy days! I'm off work now till next Tuesday, so you know what I'm going to be doing!!

Thanks all

Crispin
