Hi Splat,
do you really think you can only compare the need of oil and gas
between 2 and 4 strokes? An acquaitance here changed 3 years ago from 2 strokes to 4 strokes.
He mentioned exactly the same reason. He said he paid too much money for gas and premix oil over a season.
But what about repair costs?
I was thinking for years that a 4 stroke lasts longer than a 2 stroke,
but today I´m not sure. The Husaberg does, no doubt ,
but what about the others, so called "high tech" thumpers?
I was on a motocross track today, I saw a Suzuki DR-Z which engine suddenly was blown. Apparently a valve was broken, I think. And he was going to pull the throttle to end position. OUCH 8O That will cost a little fortune. Japanese spare parts are very expensive. The engine is ready for the scrap heap.
I must admit, I had a little bit of malicious joy. Sorry about that, but everyone here laughs at us and lots of them don´t take us serios.
But whose engine is really long lasting?
Honda? I think: No.
KTM? Maybe. Or Yamaha? But they have had also problems with their engines/transmission.
Now I ride 4 strokes for 11 years. I always believed in 4 strokes because of the engines reliability. And: Sound!
2 strokes are always stinking and make a lot of noise, no sound.
I don´t want to start a discussion about 2 and 4 strokes, I know why I ride
mine, but I think only talking about what you have to pay at the gas station doesn´t hit the point. It cuts both ways.
greetings
