Husaberg Ignition Marks are way off!

checked the TDC on mine again tonight and as told before-the TDC marks as supplied on the flywheel are out but did i say 13 degrees out!!!!

so i rescribed the marks tonight and have provisionally set the ignition again-static. the book says that the ignition should be set with the engine at TDC and that the right hand line should align with the ignition mark mounted in the flywheel cover.

can anyone tell me which of the original lines was supposed to be for TDC? left r right?

as the engine rotates clockwise (as seen from the ignition side) i take it that the leading line is 5 degrees BTDC and that the left hand-and later line is TDC?

finally, i believe that i've seen from Dale Lineweaver recently the optimum advance angle. dale how do you like to set it? a strobe at 4,000rpm and which line? just to be clear mind.

also do you have a 'pool' fuel advance with the SEM?
and also a good quality fuel advance? (note i haven't said mega expensive concoctions!)

man i'd love to put this thing on the dyno now if i've really got it sorted.

Hi Taffy,
Most often the leading rotor mark is closest to that of actual TDC.

How I do it:
Positively locate TDC via the positive stop / degree wheel method.
Apply confirmed permanent case and rotor markings.
Use a dial back timing light to inspect the dynamic ignition timing under various conditions.
Lastly, It is the power level and / or detonation threshold that dictates the final curve.

Note regarding Husaberg:
Dial back timing lights will read double that of the actual advance.

well if the leading line was meant to be the TDC mark that makes the line just 8 degrees out having done the dead stop method.

anyway. i don't follow your dynamic light test. i've got two snap-on timing lights. one has the little spin wheel on the back and the other is mine and it's digital and i hate it. could you explain a bit more please?

sussed the timing deal, yes i suppose that's an obvious explanation.

would the ignition curve being 8 degrees ******** on even standard settings level the power off anywhere? top end i suspect.

Since you only can see the flywheel in the inspection plug, where to put the TDC mark? Inspection plug cover hole? Shall the 32-36 degree mark be on the flywheel?

I haven't checked this but since the stator is fitted at TDC, how does the ignition know the advance? Is the flywheel magnetic field in a position right of the TDC mark?
 
Once TDC is positively identified with matching rotor and case scribes (visible via the inspection plug) simply connect an inductive "Dial Back To Zero" timing light to the high tension lead and adjust the lights strobe (dial or button) until the TDC scribes are in alignment. Take notice of the lights dial marking and / or digital readout and divide by two. Such is your ignition advance in degrees BTDC.

If it were not for the wasted spark ignition (every 360 degrees) said reading would be direct.

Helpful hint:
Use the inspection plug center as your case scribe. :wink:

Have remarked my flywheel using the TDC static method. I now need to get hold of a dial back timing light. Once I get hold of one of these, what am I aiming to get to for correct timing (72 deg)? I guess this indicates 36 deg actual advance from TDC but is this the figure I'm trying to set it at?
