Husaberg Christmas Shopping list????

Chaps,

Wife has asked me what I'd like for Christmas..........so u know where this is going!

What I don't want is stuff too "top end of the market", where you won't really get bang for your buck/or notice the difference unless you race, (i.e. very expensive wheels at £1000+ that are a bit lighter so aid marginally to handling/lap times etc, or incredibly expensive forks/shock systems, again only really peak usage improvements for the cost outlay).

What I'm looking for perhaps, is some items/changes that would contribute to power/performance output, that I can still get some enjoyment from as an occasional track day/road user.

I've got the Akra slip-on, & love that! I was thinking of;

Dynojet tuning (can you fit those power commander USB units to a Husa???)
Maybe a high-flow air filter (like Chris #64 mentioned)?
What sort of price are u looking at for the port polishing/race prep? (expect too expensive?)

Anything else?

If you do these sorts of mods, do they affect your maintenance schedule, i.e. reduce time between them because your getting more from the engine etc??

Any feedback appreciated, thanks

Crispin

Ummm...the dynojet stuff usually alters fuelling through the EFI...you've got a carb for that. ;) I'd say a proper dyno jetting tuneup would probably give the most value for money. :)

Apart from that, the odd anodized bling part, hand guards...etc, husaberg clothing perhaps?

/J

Thanks /J

Just before this slips off the front screen, has anyone else got any further suggestions please?

Crispin

Hey Crispy,

The dealer I brought my FE from said that he runs one of those powerblade carb venturis and a R&D quickshot accelerator pump covers, he recons that makes the performance very crisp on his 550 (motocrosser) - to me thats about 250 - 300$A - a pretty good xmas prezzy.

Bling bling?

For fuc... sake the bling bling stuff is for the copycat bikes, a real bike don`t need that stuff.
And a Husaberg is built to go fast enough without Acra and other placebocrap.
New tires Michelin S12 for each month of the year would be a great present.
Regards
Jampe

Good on you Jampe, yep its serious bling bling isnt it? like colured silicone hoses and multi tone anodised rims? it'd take a pretty keen eye to pick a bike with an aftermarket AC pump cover, and i know you cant spot an intake blade.

I suggested those things as third hand advice, I havent used them and dont need extra power ou to my 550, its tough enough as is, but with all due respect, regarding the bling bling comment, pull your head in.

I'm not sure if folks have misunderstood my first post, as I am a little bemused with some of the responses.

With reference to the three items I was going to change (in the above quote, i.e. Dyno tuning @ £30 a time to optimise fuel/air ratio, high-flow air filter @ £10 & port polishing @£110), care to explain which of these are considered "bling bling"?

As far as I can tell, if these were done, nobody would be any the wiser, and there’s not an ounce of anodised material between them, so what’s bling about that?

As I said, I was looking for economic performance improvement. Yes these bikes are fast, but are you saying for a marginal outlay, you would say "no thanks" to increased acceleration & smoother power delivery?

Get it jetted to suit the pipe and filter set-up.

If the suspension is set up as well as you can then maybe (if you feel it needs it) get a K-Tech suspension re-work package done.

Good hand guards (Enduro Engineering etc)

The get her to buy you a box of "Sh*t the shops shut stuff".

In the "S*it Box" should be the following:

Front and rear pads
Front and rear bearings
Rocker cover gaskets
Water pump gasket/seals
Fork seals
Head race bearings
Spark plug
Filter
Front and Rear tubes

This box is very, very boring to most people but it only gets opened in an emergency, Saturday night/Sunday morning before a ride when one of the things in The Sh*t Box is the difference between going for a ride or a day down at B&Q.

Thats when you'll realise it's the BEST present ever...:)

Don't use stuff out of it when you can go and get it from the shops cos' then it will just become an "Ohhh! S8it...I had one box"...

What an incredible boring post - however it makes SOOO much sense. :!:
We should all have this box.
Don't forget the spare shifter lever, brake lever, clutch lever and front brake lever. They should be mounted somewhere on the bike in a neat way.

Crispin, what you have to ask yourself is this. Is your main goal to shave that extra 1/10 of a sec around the track OR is it to have the most fun?

If your goal is to shave time then gas for the bike/transporter + tires + tracktime fee is the way to spend money. Possibly get your forks/shock to a seriously good suspension guy.

If it is to have as much fun as possible for a reasonable cost go for a slightly ported head , full akro ti system and some time on the dyno. Try to get a more aggresive CDI with some 1000rpm extra.

If you have some more money you add a larger carb to match the larger valves you added to the ported head. With this setup you also need a twin exhaust and some more time on the dyno.

If you have even more money and it is that time of year when you split the cases you add the older 644cc crank and buy an MMC con rod from MX Composites.

Edit: My bad, you already have the 644 I see. Well, that only means you have some extra cash to blow on suspension work :D

Small stuff that’s not too pricy would make good suggestion.
Anodised oil filler plug, Anodised petrol filler cap, Titanium gear change lever, Some titanium bolts such as brake calliper bolts or engine bolts, or there’s carbon bits such as frame guards, chain guard, (mud guards would get expensive). CNC Clutch cover.
Tyres would be nice but women get upset when you’ve used them and need to replace them in a couple of months.
How about a selection of sprockets to change the gearing, so if your planning a long run, small rear sprocket or playing about, large rear one.
At the moment I’m on the look out for some 6mm Titanium plate to replace the engine mounting brackets.

I've just organised a plasma cutter that the wife said I can have for Christmas!

Steve

Thanks chaps,

Spike, filling your sh!t box sounds like a very prudent undertaking, even though it sounds so wrong, thanks for the idea pal!

Jocke D, yes thanks, was thinking along those lines, i.e. maximum pleasure for minimum pain, get some more fun factor for minimal expense. I think I'll go for porting, air filter, & a session or 2 on the dyno just to get it running at it's best with the slip on etc.

There has been some other options suggested, namely high compression piston & modified design Ti valve springs - (reduce engine drag), though I need to consider BHP gain versus the £, and make a careful choice. I've a budget anyway, so I'll see how to get the best improvement for the money by adopting a top-down approach, working through the different combos.

Badvoc, thanks for the ideas, the sprockets I'd not thought of before.

And finally Steve, Plasma Cutter??!! Any major projects on the horizon...?

Crispin

Jocke D; "Try to get a more aggresive CDI with some 1000rpm extra."

That sound interesting! Where would you get one of these?

Cheers spanner.

Hi Crispin, in light of recent events how about some stablizer wheels? only joking! how about the twin valve springs? or some shiney new hand gaurds?
regards,
jockular.

lol, cheers Jockular, I got the new hand guards fitted, though I might consider the springs (but they came to approx £280 on their own... although was told estimated 2-3 BHP gain = £93.3 per pony!)

Cheers

Crispin

Ł280, really? mine were less than half that! mines only a wee 550 tho, i thought they would be the same. have a word with Taffy. their definitely worth doing.
Jockular.

Yeah, that was £70 per spring (x 4) = £280, then labour on top, although as you say, they could be different valves altogether.

I only wish Taffy was a bit closer, as I'd be able to drop in for all this sort of on-going work, & then he could retire to a nice Carrabien Island in the tropics afterwards!! :D

I'd got for the head work any day. Opening up the inlets and exaust ports smooths up the power delivery no end. Then you can get oversized valves, titanium springs, Hotcam.... or any mixture depending on money. Big improvement, that wont comprimise reliability.

The high flow DNA airfilter, is circa £40, plus the cleaning kit is £10. On a dyno, I saw a gain of 1bhp on my last bike using a DNA filter. So a cheap BHP if thats what your after.

Also, after any of these mods it'd be worth a dnyo run or two to sort your fueling, you don't want to end up runnin the thing too hot now eh. Plus big bergs love to run a little rich, they rev better at the top end when they're slighlty overfueled.

I sincerely hope you are talking about valve+spring for £70 8O
I am picking up my 450 head from 'Berg R&D this afternoon with new "KTM double springs". They are some £10 each depending on current exchange rates.
